Dupplica: Cheap Online Backup Thoughts?

Interesting as I'm currently in the progress of beefing up my backup policy. Everything of importance is mirrored via DrivePool but my offsite/redundant policy is lacking! One thing to bear in mind, like a lot of these companies is:

Dupplica keeps previous versions of files and deleted files for 30 days on their servers.

I believe one of the few companies to keep unlimited versions (or for however long you choose to keep them for) is Crashplan. If you're anything like it me could be months until you find out a file got corrupted somehow so 30 days just isn't enough. It's $4/month at the moment so whilst double the price still pretty cheap, and obviously very well known.

Think it's via paypal, I paid for a few years to get a silly discount on it last year so probably was.

Crashplan is excellent, has saved my bacon a few times! I wouldn't use it for work related info personally (as it is US based) but for my stuff e.g. photos etc it's perfect.

350Gb on it and counting - I do keep an encrypted local backup too of course.

Also you need to update your org sig image mate :)

well while it sounds good after getting suckered into bitcasa, then their recient, you have 3 weeks to download all your stuff or were going to start charging you $1000 a year.

i am not sure id be willing to trust any never mind that the website for it looks exactly like the bitcasa one.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I went back to Google as it did look a bit of a scam.

Is it safe to put confidential data on Google drive? If not, how do you back it up?

If you're using *any* cloud service to back up confidential data, you need to make sure it's encrypted client-side first - this is particularly important in a business setting where data protection laws may also come into play. CrashPlan claims to do this - after recent revelations some people may be wary of storing even encrypted data on US servers, but if the NSA (or GCHQ for that matter) are likely to take a serious interest in your stuff, you're probably asking for advice in the wrong place anyway.

Google Drive should be safe enough if you use it in combination with something like Viivo or Boxcryptor - the downside is that you need extra local drive space to store both encrypted and plaintext data.

I use dupplica , up to 3.2 tera now, no problems here.
We just got the business suit https://www.dupplica.com/business
And we use it with Windows and Mac machines.
Thats how i got here, searching for information about the business plan they offer.
Anyway, Dupplica online backup works for us here in the office, yhe restore we used ( twice) was very easy and quick

I use Backblaze and it's been brilliant so far.

$5 a month and unlimited storage and no upload limits depending on total backup size unlike Carbonite and some others.

It has two factor authentication and a mobile app that works well.

The pricing seems good but I wouldn't be at all surprised after they have a certain number of customers they'll discover they can't sustain the unlimited plans.

I've looked into this a few times as family ask me too but I couldn't see much that came close to crashplan.

Couldn't see anything on dupplica's website about being able to choose your own encryption key or whether their client software allows local backups or remote backups to friends machines like crashplan can.
