Michelin Pilot Sport 3 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2

Yup, don't fancy using my Oz's through winter with all the salt and grime plus new potholes appearing so I swap back to standard wheels once winter lands on us.

With the std wheels being 18s there's a bit more sidewall to absorb potholes plus I'd expect the finish to be more salt resistant plus they're a lot easier and quicker to clean. Briefly considered winter tyres for them but prefer to be able to use them all year round if needed. Plus its lot luck if winter is snowy or mild like last year.

Surely there's a better way, all season tyres perhaps?

I'm happy enough swapping the wheels over near winter time - they don't need the tlc my Oz's get, so if the weather's bad it's not a problem leaving them filthy for a week or 2.

And it gives me a bit of a lift when spring appears and I get the car looking at it's best again with the 19's back on it :)

I moved from CSS3 to M Pilot Sport 3 and they are miles better. The grip in the wet and try (acceleration and cornering) is 3 times better.

Can't speak for the Goodyear sorry.

3 times better? Really? 3 times?

This is why user reviews on tyres are worthless. It's just far too subjective for you to be able trust what people are saying. There is, of course, no way that the Pilot Sport 3 is '3 times better' than a CS3. 3 times better would be an enormous difference. It would brake in the wet in a fraction of the distance for instance!

Plus here is a set of professional figures which show the relative performance of CS3 v PS3:

3 times better :D

Don't think i can agree with 3 times better.

I would say the f1 as2 is better in every way than the ps3 but that is on different cars.

As fox said the ps3 is the new pe2 which i had on my old car. F1 as2 is the better tyre.

I mean all season tyres on the wheels you basically only use in winter, not to run them all year round routinely :p

Recently had PS3s put on the front but not happy with the grip. Car fights for traction when VTEC kicks in (y0) in first and second unless it's a warm day.

Worth replacing with the Eagle F1's considering they're on offer at £85 a corner?
Car is a CTR.

The PS3 is not the PS2 replacement, it is the Pilot Exalto 2 replacement iirc. It isn't therefore quite the same type of tyre as the AS2 and I wouldn't pick it over the Goodyear as a result.

But which one is inferior to the AS2 :p

I've got AS2's all round on my MK5 R32. Had them for around a 15 months or so now and I find them really decent. Wet and dry grip is pretty epic and quite confidence inspiring, I don't find them very loud. Certainly no louder than previous tyres I've used (Conti CS3's and some crappy Dunlops). Wear seems pretty good so far but I only tend to do around 5000 miles a year so I'm expecting them to last a good while yet.

I'm very happy with them and would highly recommend them to others

Hi there

Probably not suitable for either of you due to noise and economy being a request, but the Yokohama V105 is supposed to be the new wet handling kind with none of the drawbacks of the F1AS2 when it also comes to try dry handling. Very sporty tyre with superb performance but let down by poor economy figures which I'd imagine also means it is not quiet.

I can confirm the wet grip on these is superb! :)

I have the PS3 on my Focus ST.

I find them very noisey and not very good in the wet. I wouldn't recommend them at the price they currently sell for. I haven't tried the f1s yet but will probably choose them next time after looking at reviews

I notice this with my ps3s in the cold weather. It'll warm up a bit soon so give it until then. Not sure I would spend £170 to offset it lighting up in the cold.

Had F1AS2s on my DC5 since the start of winter. XL versions (so reinforced side walls) so there is a bit of noise from them, but nothing too intrusive in my mind. Handle really well in all conditions. Sometimes breaks traction at the top end of second gear, but the road has to be very greasy to do so!

Got them on the M3 and yep wet grip is mind blowing and great feedback. Maybe only better wet tyre out there would be Uniroyal rainsports 3, but at expense of dry grip.

The V105 seems great all rounder, very firm sidewalls and good feedback.

I went though a couple of sets of Eagle F1 A2s on my Focus ST. They didn't seem to last very long and they made horrific road noise once they were past about 70% worn.

They did grip very well though. Including in the wet.

Had no problems with the PS3's lighting up in the cold and wet on my Megane 250. There was not than enough grip available even when pushing on at -1 with rain hammering down

I'm amazed you can't get wheelspin in first gear when pushing on in the wet.
