I can either crossfire 290x 8gb for around £600

Or pick up a 980 now and sli next week

which would last me longer? id like to max out games such as witcher 3 / division etc

970 sli is a no go tried them and they were a complete stutterfest

I had a lot of problems with 970 sli

First i would get sudden fps drops in crysis3 , then stuttering in far cry 4 (on ultra no msaa)

On uniengine heaven 4 it was stuttering on stock clocks,

I think once it goes ovet 3.5gig vrsm the problems occur, but i was getting problems on even 2gig of vram usage

I narrowed it down to either 290x cf or just get a single 980 and upgrade again when big maxwell comes out

What do you guys reckon would be the best option

I'll admit bias. I went the 980 route. Bought one, then another.
Their performance is great and the coolers are quiet.
DX 12 is the joker in the pack. Either brand would be just fine IMHO. based on cost alone the red team would be a better buy.

i went with the crossfire 290x 8gb's

better value for money that the 980s in my opinion

my only concern is i get a burning rubbery smell when playing games, as the top card reaches 90 degrees C when gaming

do you reckon this smell will go away?

I suggest changing up your fan profile and maybe undervolting the cards to get temps down. Might also be a good time to clean out any case filters to improve airflow

not sure how you have them but with the rampage board could you not have a bigger gap between the 290x's, this will help with heat big time

Not good at all. The card will be throttling at that temperature.

How's the ventilation in your case?

The card won't throttle until 94c.

Changing the thermal paste may help with the smell, but of course only do this if you're comfortable.

I'd recommend undervolting the card if you're running at stock. Start at -0.025v and go from there.

Improve case airflow. Lots of intake fans and a side exhaust fan, or remove the side panel of your case.

Use two to three slot spacing between the cards.

Watercool.

the cards themselves aren't defunct though are they? its just smell because of a lot of heat

i will try to get more airflow in my case but i use a soundcard too so spacing can become a problem

the both have plenty of room around them. Maybe turn up the case fans and GPU fans when playing games

edit: looks like a sound card between the two cards

Hi guys,

Im not bothered about the actual temps, the gaming performance is great

The only thing that concerns me is when they heat up it emitts a wierd type of smell that i can only describe as a piece of rubber burning. i just wanted to know if this was normal or should i ask for a replacement/or possible get them replaced by a couple of r9 290x tri-x's

My old msi lightening 290x 4g never had this smell that is why im a bit concerned. don't want my pc to catch a fire whilst playing minecraft:D
