Jen-Hsun On GeForce GTX 970

Nvidia in the wrong

Still an amazing card

Half the people whining about it are amd fanboys stiring up crap (as is tradition)

People like to moan about everything

Pretty sure we don't need the hardy boys on this case.

Just been doing some browsing on Google and apparently the 970 uses all 3 types of VRAM available, Samsung, Hynix and Elpida. The question I have is how much does the choice of VRAM effect the cards when it comes to stuttering etc. The reason I ask this is the different makes of memory have different timings and performance.

I also noticed in some runs done that Hynix cards are about 3% slower than Samsung ones when using the same clocks. If people with 970s could check this to be sure.

No it was not

The boxes are identical and it does not mention which type of memory is being used.

As all 4 cards were bought together and are the same model it would be fair to expect the same memory.

If AIB partners are allowed to use different memory it should state what type is in use on the box so the buyer can make an informed choice.

Anyone up for a class action, come on guys who wants to sue AMD !!!

Hang on wait AMD are broke forget it lol.:p

This is actually a very good point. AMDMatt even stated the difference can be 1000 points in 3DFirestrike and that is both at the same clocks. That is quite a big difference to me.

It doesn't detract from nVidia being wrong but it does show that the differences between AMD cards are a lottery and it shouldn't be that way. It should clearly state what memory is used for each card and not left in the lap of the God's which you get.

Like Pgtips got elpida on his 780's, was Elpida on the box?

Is the vrm producers name on the box?

Is there a comparative 1000 point difference in performance running cards at their rated stock spec out the box?

If it was as siple as that, there wouldn't be an issue, the 970 non unified vram allocation-it's like Hussein Bolt doing a Triathlon different-fast-sllllllllllllllooooooooooooowwwwwwwww-fast-sllllllllllllllooooooooooooowwwwwwwww.

Dont be ignorant.:p

Googles Hussein bolt...

Have you tested.:D

I notice my Samsung based 980s can out perform other 980s using higher clocks.:)

The VRM producers name should be on the box yes. If you buy a card based on a review that has Samsung memory and your one turns up with Elpida memory, I think you have more cause to complain than any 970 owner as you have been misled.

Yes, Elpida/Hynx both do the same job at their rated speeds.

You haven't been misled, rated speed out the box is what counts, if a core hits a +100Mhz oc ceiling is their cause to complain if yours reaches +200Mhz, oc'ing is a bonus and certainly not advertised by AMD/Nvidia, you know that.

One is elpida the other Samsung, both iirc are something like 6200mhz effective on the stock bios, no performance difference at stock (outside of margin of error stuff) but once clocked up the sammys destroy elpida, far more efficient, though it's surprising the elpida card will still do 7ghz+, which in turn craps all over most other elpida cards that struggle to break 6600/6700.

Doesn't say squat on the box, tbh I expected elpida, but the Sammy card is an ex review sample iirc.

They perform differently out of the box too before we talk about overclocking.

If you max the memory with a 4gb game then the VRAM with the slower timings (Elpida or Hynix) could be responsible for things like more stuttering compared to the faster Samsung.

Yer, my point is it is wrong and should be stated. I have Samsung on my Titans (all 3) but some got Elpida, which I feel is wrong. It should be stated what gets what for both AMD and nVidia.

My 780 has Hynix ram I found out the other week, clocks to 7400mhz which ain't too shabby imo, if I had known it had Hynix I would have still bought it.

You sure about that? Thought all Titans came with Samsung ram, I know mine do.

Not 100% Gee and working from memory (which you and I both know fails at times). I am sure I read on OCN that a few got Elpida because there was a shortage on Samsung RAM but again, not 100%.

Error on your part I think bud! If anything, possibly Samsung/Hynix. I can't see them fitting Elpida to any of the Titan range.

I've had games stutter with my Titans. Does this mean I ran out of Vram :p
