What colour is this dress?

I saw white and gold at first. I was certain that people were trolling about it being black and blue, maybe making a joke about it being a negative of the original or something, but oh my lord... it's true. Colour changed. Mind fully blown.

Haha, I'm calling shenanigans! All day, I would see it as very faint blue/white and brown/gold. Absolutely no way would I have said it was blue & black.

Then I did this:

If you see white and gold, try looking at this for a minute and then go back to the original:

I can't see it in white and gold anymore :/

And now all versions are definitely blue & black

Even the very left one in this link:

So I was white/gold but seeing it like this I'm now fully blue/black

Even when I see it as blue & black, the black isn't a true black, but it is very noticably different to the gold / brown that I saw previously and the blue is much more clearly a blue than the incredibly faint blue white I was previously seeing.

The human brain is fascinating.

Now the one on the right is Black and Blue. How on earth can anyone say the original was Black and Blue really beggars belief !

I would have been the exact same as you for most of today, I would have sworn there was absolutely no way the one on the left could be described as black - maybe an incredibly pale bluish white, but no way was the brown/gold bit anywhere near black.

But now, I do see it as clearly black and blue, particularly towards bottom of the dress, and I certainly wouldn't describe the dress as white & brown/gold now. If I look at the top of the dress on the left, then the 'black' does start to go a bit browny/gold, but it's completely different to when I would have said without a shadow of doubt it couldn't possibly be black.

Hard to explain, but when you do see blue&black it's not necessarily a true pure black, but if/when you do see it as blue/black you'd be equally confused as to how someone could describe it as white/gold as you currently are with how people see blue/black!

Despite seeing it both ways, I honestly can't see how I was ever convinced that it was the other combination. It's almost like someone's swapped the pictures.

I dunno... I think if you suddenly look at the picture without having thought about it for a while it will generally appear to you however the picture first appeared (white + gold for me)... but after you've seen the black + blue a few times it becomes easier to switch between the two...

I find I tend to have an easier time seeing the black + blue if I happen to be scrolling up from the bottom of the picture... and white + gold if scrolling down

Definitely blue and black all day, some peoples eyes must be retarded. Even the white-balanced version still looks blue and black, be it a washed-out black as the brightness has been whacked-up so in relation to the rest of the image you'd concur its actually black. You could technically argue in the white-balanced version the black independently looks grey with hints of green. Certainly not a gold you would compare to a gold ring.

I don't know if as i'm in graphic design I'm used to over-analysing colours so that's why I can't see white/gold, weird!?!

I saw white and gold but only for a brief moment, blinked and it was blue/black

I think the top part of the image is supposed to trick you into seeing white and gold but like all illusions "whats been seen can not be unseen" so once your eyes scrolls down the photo and see the truth it stays that way

Still white and gold for me. I zoomed right into the image and showed all my family who see black blue and they all said gold!!! I slowly zoomed out and they all saw gold white... By the time I'd zoomed right out they said blue black!! Those who can't see gold white, on your phone just zoom right into the top part of the image, it's clearly browny gold. Then slowly zoom out..

Anyway, my point is I am fully aware how white balance affects colours on piece of clothing and skin, and the original photo as it is, it is not black and blue.

The phenomenon is caused by different interpretation of the white balance between different people (or even the same people at different times), not necessarily the white balance itself. It's down to which part of the picture your brain is choosing to be it's grey point and correct for, meaning some people view it with a blue tint and others yellower.

Personally it's yet to appear anything other than blue and black regardless of what picture I look at!

The only way is to put it through photoshop and see !

p.s. I don't seem to be affected by this phenomenon, different time, different screens, different room lighting conditions, different angles, I tried everything and see the same thing !

Black and blue - photoshop seems to say the same for the picture I have seen. Good enough for me.

WE all see things slightly differently anyway.

I always see the same thing but different to you, you're affected by it whether you like it or not, your brain has to choose a reference point to correct for. Yours is consistently picking one that makes you see white and gold, mine is consistently picking one that makes me see blue and black, others see both. Photoshop is irrelevant, the difference is caused by where your brain decides is the correct light, that's all.

It was resolutely black / blue for me then I got distracted with something else and now it's white / gold. Arghhh

I am saying that with PS, you are looking at a single colour, without the others to influence your brain.

So it is a single colour on the screen.

Like this.
