When i switch on my comp and check the GPU temp its around 30c and then climbs to around 37-40c.

But i just woke up earlier, switched my PC on and the GPU temp is at 50c and will not drop below it.

Bear in mind i have never overclocked my card (R9 290 gigabyte OC windforce anyway).

I have seen my card underclock itself at times to keep the temps below 85c

My memory clock wont drop below 1250 at all right now so my vrm temps are high.

My vram usage and temp pushing up my GPU temp???

Vrm1 and Vrm2 are at 43c and 56c where as they both usually around 30-35c.

I am guessing my card is ******.

How many monitors have you got?

1 monitor, no fancy screen saver.

Had a BF4 not responding nonsense last night,a bog standard crash to desktop one, shut down my computer and thought nothing of it.

I failed to mention in my opening post that when i switched on my comp today i had some strange colours going through the boot process.

Whole screen flashing one solid colour, red, then green, then blue, cant be sure it was that order but those were the colours, then the login screen for windows.

RGB primary colours too.

Hasn't done that in the few reboots i have had since that opening boot up.

Rebooted with gfx card in performance mode and quiet mode hoping that would sort it out but no change.

My GPU core clock is fine at idle, around 300mhz clock speed but my mem clock is maxxed out at 1250mhz.

Doesn't sound too clever does it?

I have one monitor thro DP but i have a hdmi lead running into my Sony amp as well, which then plugs into my 50" plasma but that display is disabled.

But i just shut down my PC again, unplugged the hdmi lead to the amp and my mem clock is now 150mhz after bootup.

My PC was detecting the amp and my gfx card must have thought it was powering two displays, not one??
Have it set to show desktop only on 1.
Mem clock only hits 1250 at all times when extending or duplicating the screens so there must have been a hiccup, even though it was disabled.

Plugged the hdmi cable back into the amp and my memory clock is back to normal again.

Anyway, thanks guys for the info and ideas, i am just happy that everything is running as it should be.

Sweet.

Yes, if two monitors are connected then the gpu clocks need to be higher. :)

My XFX 290 is hooked up to two 29" superwide monitors and at idle the card sits at around 32-34c the fans spin up or down as the card heats and cools, but if I'm watching a film with my living room door closed the card will go to about 48-50c, and when on BF4 the card hits around 68-72c with the fans hitting about 58 rpm, my core clock is set at 1050 and mem clock is at 1400 with +5 core voltage .

Although sometimes the card does seem to ramp up ....no idea why though

I knew that but i didn't realise it had decided to try and power a display that wasn't enabled :D

Not sure PC's in general were designed with audio amplifiers in mind though :)

If the screens are the same resolution, I've found the card will still clock memory down. I used to have higher idle clocks with lots of different cards (5870, 5870CF, 7970, 7970CF, 290CF) and screens (1920x1200 + 1600x1200, 2x1920x1080 + 1920x1200, 3x1920x1080 + 1600x1200). Soon as I had monitors with matching resolutions (1080p x4, 2 different makes) my idle clocks dropped and hence my idle temps did too.

Not 100% sure what the rules are, but my experience says that if the screens are the same resolution and 60Hz, your card will idle completely, if you out a different screen in the mix you'll get memory clocks always running at the higher rate.

Good info, thanks Stu.

Multi monitor is not something i have a lot of experience with. I have an Eyefinity setup downstairs waiting to be setup so i can get to grips with it.

Definitely worth the time setting it up. Some people love it (me!) and others just don't get on with it. Personally, I now find it weird gaming on one screen, it feels like having blinkers on.

When you do get it set up and Eyefinity enabled, fire up Just Cause 2 to see how multi-monitor playing should be. Then try COD4 to see how it shouldn't be done (stretched one screen's worth over 3), then try Black Ops 2 to see how annoying it can be (aspect ratio is fine, but arbitrarily puts a black box over anything past 4800 wide!). Personally, love Eyefinity gaming. :)

I don't think it's for me, i prefer having one large screen. However I'll need to set it up and use it for a bit just so I'm familiar with it. You should see the box it arrived it, it's bloody huge!

Cool, Eyefinity unboxing and setup thread coming up (with pics)? Look forward to it. :D
