Regarding a point someone mentioned last night when I was struggling (he thought I'd upgraded badly when I hadn't and thought it may have been a contributory factor to my overheating issues).

What is a good setup for a Cobra (trade wise) when I get one?

Word of warning for rookies buying and outfitting Cobra Mk IIIs:-

The easiest mistake for you to make is not watching the potential effects of an upgrade before buying it, in particular the FSD.

So many people have "upgraded" their FSD and not realised that their jump range has plummeted to single figures.

These ships need BIG components. Your new FSD must be a Class 4.

Got rid of the Class A battle Cobra just could not get on with it, really disliked how the 2nd hardpoints are so far apart they miss everything unless its 10km out.

I've never had a problem. Two fixed beam lasers on the top points and two gimballed multicannons on the wide ones.

I don't do a lot of combat (Mostly Harmless/Merchant/Path Finder) but this setup never misses.

In all honestly, you have to be blind to make this mistake... you see the jump range figure in red with a downward arrow on the bottom right if you select an FSD that has less range than the one you already have (if blue that means you've gained range), plus the info box to the left has red (negative) and blue (positive) figures indicating performance, grade etc. Yes mistakes can be made, but you really do have to be a COMPLETE newb to make this error... and if you've managed to make 380k to buy the Cobra in the first place, you surely possess some modicum of skill? ;)

I realised this - went shopping for a longer range FSD and even the A and B rated ones were reducing my jump range and I couldn't understand it!?!?! Turns out they were 3's and not 4's and I had to go elsewhere! Also upgraded my power one or two other components and it's made the rare run a lot smoother!

I can get back with just a single fuel scooping now! :)

Didn't you look to see the jump range figure plummet on the stats bottom right? IT TELLS YOU BEFORE YOU BUY lol! Red = less, blue = more.

Whilst you and I are aware of this, it is nevertheless the single most common error that people seem to make in outfitting.

We have a fellow poster, StevieP here, that nearly fell foul of it: hundreds of commanders have.

I am in a Cobra with no shield generator/weapons it does not always outrun if your carrying a large amount of Rare cargo I find the ship to be sluggish to handle so making the Interdiction escape vector is way tougher.

You need A-rated thrusters on a Cobra Mk III: anything less will not show the ship in its true colours.

Yay! After many many days of plugging away at missions, I finally got the rank of "Post Commander" for the Federation. That was a real chore as well, as they just didn't seem to want me :(:p

Just wondering what the state of play is with this after a couple of weeks away, worth getting my HOTAS out again? I know there are some updates coming in terms of wings, but as it stands? I had a half-way upgraded ASP in storage when I just burned out with my love for this.

There's been a few bug fixes, but no real content added; probably best to see what the Wings update brings, then decide if it's worth your time.

I figured that much - I just didn't fully appreciate why lol! :D

Here is my Cobra - any tips on what I should be looking to upgrade next??

ps. anyone know why Apsilon is suspended? It was kinda nice having someone at a similar level to me on this game! :)

We'll, part of the game is that there is no cookie cutter one size fits best approach to ship upgrades but personally I'd look at getting an A4 power plant followed by FSD and thrusters.

StevieP: A-rated thrusters all the way, baby!

:: ahem ::

Then FSD, then shield generator, all the while making sure your power plant can cope.

In theory, an A4 power plant is the way to go in the end, but if you don't need all the power that it provides, stick with A-rated but go for a lower size class which will raise your jump distance while retaining your heat management.

What hardpoints have you got?

Are you prioritising your power distribution correctly in the Modules tab?
