Mk4 Mondeo Whine

Queen wasp? Sorry, it's not GD is it :D

I'm not too sure what the sound actually is though.

Sounds like a water pump or pulley whine - not sure when the mondeos get their pump changed or how involved it is?

Easy way to eliminate it, assuming the pump is belt driven is to slip off the aux belt then run it for a minute

Sounds like a water pump/pulley as above to me. Very similar noise to that made from my Mrs' Aygo when the water pump was going and the belt was severely cracked.

As mentioned, its something driven off a belt.

Water pump on the mk4 diesel 2.0 is driven off the cambelt but I would bet its something driven off the auxillary belt so you might want to pop it off for a moment and see if the whine goes away.

Probably alternator I think.

Funny you should mention that, the Ford Garage said it could be the alternator.

Is is likely to cause an issue?

depends what it is really

if it's just the bearings in the alternator tensioner then it's likely to keep going for a time, then sieze up and take your aux belt with it and leave you with no electrical power bar the battery. Most cars will still give you enough to limp home/to a garage if this happens.

I doubt it's about to immediately implode if you've just noticed it, but worth getting sorted sooner rather than later

Thanks - I've got a service due in April, will ask them to check it then!

Eventually - they can be noisy for years before packing up. I'd just get it changed if finances allow.

PAS pumps are a known weakness on these.

Indeed, a suspected batch of faulty racks can cause issues, but IIRC its not the pump itself but the filter under the reservoir that gets clogged as a result of material from the faulty rack, restricting fluid circulation and resultant noise.

I have checked the fluid and it seems to be fine, but I'll check it before heading to work. Sounds like a warranty job then, will call them some point today!

It was getting worse so I went through the warranty. They've confirmed it's the power steering pump but being a sealed unit, they can't work out exactly 100% what the underlying issue is.

Warranty Direct has sent out one of the engineers to review the fault and the report will be filed on Monday. Shame really as we had a weekend packed full of stuff - now we're stuck at home :(

Hopefully it'll be quick from here!!

Well I heard back yesterday, it's not good news and I've been told it's a wear and tear issue (not sure how they've worked that one out) and due to the policy still being within the first 90 days, wear and tear isn't covered.

Quote from the garage is £590 fitted and should be done Wednesday. Ford wanted £700 fitted so I'll keep it with the current garage - I also think the car is already stripped so it'd be easier just to get it done.

I've asked them to keep the old pump as I want it back for a 2nd opinion!
