Very nice, dat convergence!

It feels like an Eagle crossed with a Python, I was getting nearly 400m/s out of it flat out with A thrusters, I'm a bit annoyed by the huge hardpoint - but only because huge hardpoint weapons seem to suck, I've spent so long trying to like the A4 plasma cannon on the Anaconda, but your better off with a fixed C3 beam in the slot...

I also noticed that an A3 plasma cannon was for sale in Dalton, which is interesting because I'm 99% sure, i've only ever seen A2 and A4 plasma cannons, never an A3..

Just had the most intense battle with another player. Lasted just over an hour, starting about 20km away from a station and ending 450km away. I expended 20 lots of chaff, 8 shield cells, 60 rail rounds...but I won. Eventually. 36k barely covers my resupply, but the fun makes it so worth it. I have a new level of appreciation for the Cobra Mk III. It was so hard to close down the gap between myself and another A-rated Cobra. Were it not for me being better at FA-off turns and maintaining accuracy and rate of fire (pulse on my ship, beams on his), I think it would have ended in a stalemate.

Best night on Elite ever. I am so, so stoked for Wings now!

Geeeez, that's some battle length. Fair play to you both for sticking it out and not quitting.

Yeah. I forced him to run a lot and unfortunately, if he already has a 3km head start on me (after he's boosted past and I've taken some time to turn because my pips were in SYS), then in the same ship with the same grade thrusters and full pips to ENG, I can't close the distance, giving him time to recharge his shields. Hitting with rails at that distance was very hard indeed.

I'm quite proud to have come out of that one without actually letting my shields go down once, and we did have a fair old chat about it at the end whilst he was drifting through space. I feel really bad for shooting out his engines, because I promised myself I would never do that to someone, but there was simply no other way to end the fight and I only had a couple of shots left in my rail guns. :o

I did find it much easier to keep my shields up and keep my weapons firing with this Cobra compared to the Viper I was using the night before (odd because I thought the Viper's shields were stronger). Suddenly I don't really fear for my ship unless I come up against multiple targets or something bigger like a Clipper, but damn, the Cobra is expensive and I still hate the hardpoint placement. With FDL and Vulture both looking like they might cost more than an Asp, I have to ask what Frontier are thinking; between the Cobra at around 350k and the Asp at 6.6m, the only other ship is a pure trade ship, the Type 6. That is a massive gap which really needs something to fill it, otherwise I think we're just going to carry on with a galaxy full of Cobras. :(

Edit: Hmm. The military armour upgrade suggests one thing about Vulture pricing, but looking at the classes of some of the modules it can fit, maybe it will be priced lower than the Asp. Guess we will see when the patch is released.

Not had chance to sign on yet, if you are an early adopter / beta tester (like what I am) your access to the early release patch lets you buy a new ship for next to nothing?

Do you get to keep it? (Oh please, please, please)

I won't be able to try the FDL out in the beta environment so will have to rely upon you guys....

Pros and cons of Cobra vs FDL, is it worth the upgrade in the medium size multi purpose role?

How have you all been making so much money? At the moment I'm running Palladium in my Type 6 (100 cargo) for around 200k credits per round trip. It takes me about 15 minutes to do a round trip but it's gonna take forever for me to be able to afford to upgrade to a Type 7 to be able to then double the amount of credits I get from trading this route. I only have about an hour a day to play the game so it seems like it's going to take absolutely forever to get anywhere :(

Is my profit from the trade route I'm running on par with others running 100t cargo, or can I earn a lot more with my cargo space?

I'm by no means an expert but the money you can make from rare runs is far in excess of 200k cr - there was a rare trade route posted by Legend a few pages back here that I've been using and I'm tending to net circa 800k cr each way in my Cobra!

i have similar amounts of time to you, busy family life!

When i had type 6 i was still running rares but trying to back fill my cargo hold with other commodities for the next pickup. it is a grind to the type 7

but you'll find it a bigger grind once you get the Type 7, as you'll only be able to use large pads, so makes trading abit more difficult, having said that i was running a few routes that ranged from 2400 cr/t to 2850cr/p that varied with the demand , giving me at least 500k round trip profit.

time is the expensive thing for me!

p.s. just got my Python last night... :D and man it likes to drink the fuel!

Thanks, I'll have a look at that then. Because rares take up so little space in the hold, I might have a look at buying stuff at the station to trade with the left over space in my hold. That will probably bump profits by a fair amount. How long does it take to do this rare run btw?

It largely depends on your jump range I'd imagine but in my Cobra I think it takes me about 30-45 minutes (although I've never timed it so I'm not 100% sure!)

The biggest time sink for me is the docking at the various stations (the all seem to be the letterbox type entrances which I'm not keen on!) and the fuel scooping.

So I have a day off work and thought I would have a quick go on Elite.
Not played since the 1.2 update (many other games to play!).

So loaded up with cargo and set the route.
Undocked from the space station and then things started to go wrong...

Silent running and landing gear (amongst other systems) triggered on and off.
Turbo auto engaged - in the station!
The cargo I just bought, all 500k's worth started jettisoning.
The ship eventually exploded - no idea why, probably heat build up from silent running switching on and off.

Turns out all the joystick binds have gotten messed up since I last played.

So doing a quick trade run before lunch has cost me (after insurance) 650k.

Sigh :(

There's been quite a debate on the official forum about this - one side agreeing with you (and I) that there is a massive gap between the Cobra/Type-6 and the next ships you can aspire to.

I think I mentioned before somewhere that I am currently in a Cobra and really cannot see me being able to commit the time to do anything other than keep it fully specced out for whichever task I'm carrying out that day - exploring/smugging/bit of rares trading/bit of combat - and I am really hoping that future expansions put more ships in to fill the gap.

The other side of the debate points out that there are in fact more ships to choose from in the lower pricing bracket than the upper - this kind of misses the point for me as what I think Frontier really need to do is fill out that middle ground for those of us that aspire to something better but cannot build up to an Anaconda or whatever.

Little tip for you, then:-

If you're concentrating on rares runs for a bit, lose the scoop and replace it with another cargo hold.

The amount you can make trading really does tend to outweigh the cost of fuel, particularly if you are keen on making your runs as time-efficient as possible.

It's not really an area I've studied in detail myself, but you should be able to incorporate some close-to-star outposts (i.e. easy to dock at) just to refuel at on your rares runs.
