You are right, I probably made a mistake. If anything, it revolved around Computer Science, doing programming but I wasn't great at it.

I would love to work in IT Tech as I have a lot of knowledge in it and I'm better than half the staff in this hospital.

Some of them don't even know how to change the resolution!

Well to give you an idea, I checked out the vacancies at my local hospital. The IT people there I believe were a band 5 (possibly) and the pay was £21-£29k p.a), then add on call on top etc. Not sure if London Allowence is added to that as some roles at my local hospital incur that.

That was the starting pay, and tbh the job description looked like something a brand new IT person could do.

I applied for them, spoke to the manager and he said my degree was more than enough but because someone came along with experience they had to take them.

Since I have worked here I have found they tailor the job ads to a specific person such as someone who works temporarily and is offered a permanent post, but they still have to put the ad out.

Happened in my job.

Makes it very difficult

Wow, Your right. Such a vague name.

Computing covers a MASSIVE subject, did you not specialise?

My Degree was in Computing, More specifically Artificial Intelligence & Robotics. I didn't know they did Degree's with names that cover the ENTIRE subject :/

Oh and I am a Senior IT Tech in a school and i earn 21k Prorata (around 17k Before Tax)

There's plenty of courses that are pretty vague in naming.

I did Information Technology Bsc, no specialty apart from that "Networking or Programming" modules and pretty much a wide range of subjects (some stupid ones about robots becoming the superior "beings" which made us watch movies in class).

I live in Surrey, commute to London everyday and work in IT support

We did a course called Emerging Technologies, was a waste of time in my opinion. Talking about stuff such as exoskeletons and nano technology.

Don't get me wrong, it was very interesting.. just useless.

You didn't go to Wolves uni did you? We had that module and some other completely useless but mandatory ones, one of which involved making a poster like the sort of thing they made you do at school when they couldn't think of anything else!

The easiest way to give yourself a pay rise is to switch to cheaper electric/gas/tv/phone/internet that does the same for less. Pay off any credit cards/loans that charge a lot, or switch to cheaper ones. The money you save is tax free!

38 miles a day, it would have to be worth the travel. Taking driving lessons at the moment as I have only ever rode a motorbike. Hoping to pass in the next couple of months. That will be another expense haha.

Where do you work? I'm on £19995 and I'm just a regular level IT technician. I have the experience and exposure to be a senior earning much more, but I'm only in a 3-man team so I guess by keeping the numbers down and without having any underlings of my own they can get away by undervaluing me. I'm also co-managing a primary with my boss which just rubs salt in the wounds tbh.

Anyway it's all moot because I'm looking elsewhere and at salaries between 24-30K. I've got a prospective lined up so at least I can use this as a bargaining chip because I would honestly prefer to stay where I am, just not for the money I'm earning.

Looks great on your CV though. Will make it a lot easier to find work

Most places require you have at least 2 years experience in that area, how do you get the experience without working voluntary? It's stupid and with a degree you can't go for an Apprenticeship.

It does look great - there's no denying that. I've had to fib about my current salary when I've spoken to agencies, though, so that THEY don't try to undervalue me. No one is going to give me an effective £6K pay rise. An increase of £2-3K is a lot more palatable.

I started at age 21 on £13500 at spec savers head office working on the support desk supporting the store staff and internal staff, i moved up to £16500 within a 2 year. That was in Southampton though. Then i moved to london and got a job for £23k by age 23-24. Usually get the biggest increases when you move jobs. Try to reach 30k by age 30 and you doing ok i think.
