Another day another car for work. Today it's a 14 plate 330D SE.

Stark difference to the GTD. Picks up speed quick, the 8 speed gearbox is great but I don't pike it in auto mode. In manual it's great with the paddles. Downshifts, though, lunge the car forward a bit around town which is a bit :/

In Sport and Sport+ the steering is heavier but does not feel connected to the front wheels, o can feel vibrations of the surface but it feels artificial, if that makes sense? In both these modes it's still a wafty boat like ride. Maybe I'm too used to Sport suspension and low profile tyres but this is on 45 profile 18" wheels and I couldn't live with this kind of bouncy ride.

The nav screen is pretty cool but is a dust magnet and can glare from sunlight making it hard to read as it's got no integrated visor like old models had.

The bouncyness combined with the quietness at speed makes me feel a little queezy at times. This, at least in SE form, isn't for me.

+ Amazing engine.
+ Amazing gearbox (aside from the town speed downshifts).

- Poop handling dynamics.
- Pointless Sport and Sport+ modes for an SE.
- Meh interior quality, even of it is an quiet cabin at speed.

Pointless Sport and Sport+ modes for an SE

I don't get it, how are these modes 'pointless' for an SE?

The gearbox behaves quite differently in Sport mode and it's noticeably easier to access the power - it's therefore a good choice for an A road with lots of overtaking for example. It is far from pointless and the weighting up of the steering is quite nice too. It is a user configurable mode, so you can configure which aspects you wish to change when using Sport mode.

Sport+ is simply Sport without DSC.

It doesn't change anything about the suspension in cars not fitted with variable damper control.

Is that not covered when you put the gearbox into sport rather than needing a 'sport mode'

It is, but you can also configure the Sport mode to change the gearbox program as well as the 'chassis' settings (Which in reality are just throttle and steering on a standard car), which is how it behaves as default. This removes the need to knock the shifter sideways to engage sport mode on the gearbox.

It is entirely user configurable. I really don't understand his point that it's pointless 'on an SE'. Presumably he would not find it pointless 'on an M Sport' as if which plastic bumpers are fitted have some sort of bearing on the use of a Sport mode :D

I put the 116 ED hire car I had in Sport mode every time I drove it because I got fed up of EcoPro telling me to change up to 6th when I'm already losing speed uphill in 5th.

No Aero kit? Nearly every one I've looked at has it. Looks smart although it'd have to be red for me.

Was originally going to get a red Aero one but the trader was a bit dodgy!

I'll eventually get an Aero rear spoiler but for now just gonna get the Eibach springs to drop it a little!

I bought a Mazda 3 2.0 Sport a few weeks ago and I am really quite impressed with the car, its a lot of car for not too much money. I paid 7k for a one owner 2011 with 35k on the clock. It feels so much better than a ford focus. The bose, sat nav and keyless go are a nice touch.

The only downside is that the satnav screen is rather small.

The company car is mine for the day, do we have a general car thoughts thread that is more suitable than this Blackhawk? If so then please do let me know.

I mean in terms of handling. Nothing much seems to get sportier with the handling in Sport mode. Sure the gearbox changes quicker and throttle is sharper as well as steering heavier but the handling of the chassis still remains bouncy and unsporting.

Surely Sport mode should make a noticeable difference to handling as well like it does to the other bits?

Could also argue to the need for all the modes. Older cars had 1 mode and that mode was great in all road surfaces on an average day.

Indeed. I would image it also backs of the DSC intervention aswell.

Sticky ground. I did same with JLR fleet and got called out on, so now tend to put stuff in daily encounters when I can be bothered.

Had a Disco 4 last week with 7 miles on the clock. Loved it :p

So in effect it is a bit pointless then :p Passive dampers means the handling will remain the same and you can adjust the rest individually anyway. So perhaps Sport should be renamed to "Blanket".

;)

But that's the same as posting showroom cars in that thread!

Motors forum politics 101 :p
