I would wait and see whats coming. Titans were worth it at a year ago. If you really want one then wait and see what the new titan does to the 2nd market.
Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.
I'm running a 290p and looking to change to nVidia. I'm considering a change to 2xTitan and I game at 1440p.
I love eye candy and having some serious thought about 4K but not until our attic has been converted, within 12-18 months.
I'm not really looking for an AMD alternative as I've had enough of the 290 - so thoughts on the Titans?
The Titans are a good investment and one of the best all rounder's available still to this day.
I am sorry, but are you seriously considering this change? If you are only gaming then there are cheaper options which run games better. A second hand 780Ti for example. Even the 970 with it's gimped memory performs better.
But as others have said I would wait a couple of months before changing as the release of newer cards will help you get second hand cards even cheaper.
And maybe you should post on the AMD drivers thread if you have any specific issues that are annoying you. AMDMatt is usually pretty active in that thread and this might help you live with the 290 for another few months.

The 970 is on par or better for less.
BOTTOM LINE
- RAW Power for 1440p
- All the eyecandy
- No upgrade for quite some time
That last part is key for me, so DX12 "fully compliant" is a must. I don't know what the state of play is on the AMD side of things concerning DX12 but I do believe the Titan is partly compliant and will miss out on a couple of bits. Not sure and someone else can tell you what is what but if you don't intend to upgrade for quite some time, would you be happy to miss out on parts of DX12?

So......Titans or 980?
Bearing in mind the bottom line!
Going 4K?
980 for outright performance. Titan for plenty of Vram and value for money if you can nab one at the right price.
Especially if you're planning on going multi-card & running high Res.

Not for at least 2 years - attic conversion first!

If you aren't considering upgrading for some time, then that's the Titan and 970 out of the running and it makes more and more sense to wait for a couple of months to see what Nvidia and AMD release.
