2015 Chilli Growers Thread

I think i starred mid or late april last year and it was fine. Just get them germinated asap

They came today so i've put them straight in the propagator. 10 tiger purple, 10 chocolate habaneros and 10 red cayennes.

Fingers crossed.

Just checked, its exactly a year today since i sent herman a message to post me some seeds. Youll be fine for this year

After not doing any last year, I got a few to do this year. I went for some F1 seeds this time round as they should be smaller plants and not take up as much space. Last time I ended up over run with chilli plants, literally every window had some on! I may have got a bit carried away..

I've gone for some Apache and Cayenne F1s and some Jalapenos and Marconi Red peppers. I was going to try some Tabascos again as I wanted to make Tabasco sauce but I've never had much joy getting many chillies from them.

They're all coming up nicely now so I'll pot them up this weekend into some proper pots.

Mine are growing steadily. Still pretty small.

It seems like I have an infestation of fungus gnats. I've ordered some sticky insect paper to try and control the problem.

Hmm, that's put me off using my homemade compost. It seems healthy as it is like 50% worms lol, but I guess you never know what else is lurking in there.

I have read that if you can make a hot compost heap by filling the entire compost bin in one go with a good mix of browns and greens then this should raise the temperature of the pile enough to kill off any nasties. I tend to just fill it bit by bit so its more of a cool hep/wormery.

Compost heap, so may explain things.

They are little buggers.

Ahh yes that could be it :p
You would be ok using it outside for established plants maybe but the larvae will be eating the roots on your young indoor plants. And the adults can get really annoying. If I was you I would get some of that gnatt-off stuff soon, especially if you have other indoor plants

Very disappointed in the germination rate for my Lemon Habs, 9/10 Reapers grew, 8'/10 Birds Eye and all 3 of my Numex but 3/10 Habs. The ones which did don't really seem to be growing in the new pots either.
Thanks Herman for the new thread too.

Sprinkle loads in, wait, then murder the weak. I'll pinch out the small ones in a couple of days then let the soil dry out a bit more to make the rest grow stronger roots

I strongly encourage you to avoid chemicals where possible. This can be tackled by trying to interrupt the breeding cycle of the fungus gnats and a common way is to place shingle/vermiculite/mulch on the surface. This is the barrier method ;)

Also, don't let this put you off using your own compost, as this just shows it is potent, as the fungus gnats were keen to move in! Organic and DIY is the best you can do, and it gives you satisfaction.

Cheap bags of compost from garden centres is by far the biggest risk of infection from (chemically enhanced) composts.

Good luck.

My chilli plant did not survive the journey, and I cannot for the life of me find one here :(.

I checked and the WOC site (see below) allows you to select a country to deliver to, and they sell plant plugs and plants.

This might work well for you, if in doubt give them a bell and ask what the furthest delivery distance has been. I'd be interested to know the answer.

Also, WOC have Chinese Space Chillies, whatever they might be! Reminds me of the Guatemalan Insanity Pepper:eek:
