....and their amazing off road ability.

Spent an awesome day on the North Yorkshire Moors with Yorkshire 4x4 Specialists on monday. I've done a bit of offroading before on controlled courses, but without any training, just taking it steady. Quite fancy doing some proper green laning with these guys as they run group tours, so thought I'd better learn a bit more about it!

The morning consisted of learning the basic offroad skills in a Defender 110, which was pretty fantastic. It's a modern one with anti-stall which makes things a lot easier. Learned how to get out of a failed hill climb, how to cross ruts, what to look for on river crossing etc. We then took the cars out to Rudland Rigg on the Yorkshire Moors to put it into practice. It was pretty straight forward at first (although a real shame about the low cloud as the views should have been stunning) then we got to the end and there were some huge rock steps which I honestly didn't think my car could make, but with a bit of expert guidance and spotting, we got down slowly but surely. Then there were a few river crossings, some tight steep rutted lanes followed by a cracking road drive back over the moors.

Full day out, and even more respect for what this car can do :) Now to get booked on one of their tours. Morocco sounds good....but might have to start of with the Derbyshire Dales next!

That looks like awesome fun! :D Didn't know you could increase the ride height that much on the RRS - that arch gap is massive in the first picture.

I'm heading to Ireland in a week or so with my dad and his Jeep - we're hoping to do something similar and I'm really looking forward to it.

Nice Pic's :)

Remember when Bluewater shopping centre had a small assort course on the side of the chalk quarry and managed to go on it, but now it had ended becoming a new bus route.

Yeah, that's super extended mode! The only problem is you can't select it manually, only when the sensors detect that it's about to ground out, but then you have to manually take it out again, hence why it's still extended whilst parked up. There's a mod apparently to select it on demand, which I'm going to look into as it's definitely reassuring, although you do lose a bit or articulation apparently

I never knew the suspension did that. Epic!

I always thought that the RR Sport was really only for the road or mild off-roading, guessing that in reality yours is one of the few that has actually seen some real off-road work!

Greenlaning is epic fun..

but please please join a responsible group like GLASS (Green Lane Association) to guide you on your journey.
There is some utterly beautiful countryside out there..

Good to hear that you had a good time Sagalout. I went green laning with Russ myself back in December on his Lake District tour - had an absolutely epic time!

My little Land Rover might leak like a cullender, take ages to warm up (and then only marginally classed as 'warm'), be slow noisy and alarm me with clunks and bangs - but there's nothing I'd rather be on the road with at the moment :D

Nice vid - I was going a lot slower than that!

Yeah, I will only be doing this as part of a group - don't fancy getting stuck on my own - and only on permitted routes. Already a member of TRF :)

Nice - I'd love a Defender and thoroughly enjoyed the 110. The steering is so much more direct you can feel everything under you, whereas in the sport it's more disconnected (electronic vs hydraulic I guess). It would have to be s 2nd car though and might take a while to get passed the Mrs!

It was Russ that took us out - great bloke! I might see you on one of their tours some day, although he said the Lakes one was the most extreme!

If you are careful and keep her jacked up you'll keep the bumpers from getting scratched, just make sure you make good use of the terrain response (to make it lock the diffs) to stop it scrabbling and it'll climb anything you point it at.
Just make sure you have good AA cover for when the gearbox ECU throws a hissy fit :D

I'm really not a fan of 4x4s on the road, but that looks seriously fun. Must think about doing something similar sometime. Nice write up.

4x4's in general are not for me but I always like to see one returning from clearly driving through a swamp!:D

Great fun, nice write up indeed.

Just sold my S5 and got a new Discovery. Epic fun, and ive off roaded 24 hours after I got it lol :D

Its a nice compliment to my 4.6l V8 Defender 90 soft top which im currently building :) triple LSD and autbox. Will be mental.
