hey guys

Ive recently taken purchase of a high end custom built PC courtesy of OCUK.

To complete the rig i need to buy a new montor.

im running:

MSI 290x Lightning 4gig,
I5 4690k OC'ed to 4.00 ghz
8 gig Ram

The primary games ill be playing are MMOs, RTS, racing games (i may play some FPS but certainly not primarily) and maybe some GTA5.

I have been thinking about purchasing one of the new FreeSync monitors when all the creases are ironed out.

the montior needs to be 1440p but my question is...

Do i really need 144hz? id like the monitor to last so i feel if i dont get 144hz i may regret it in the near future once more Freesync models are released

what do you guys think?

I really want to do my new rig justice and get the best monitor for me.

cheers!

Or spend the money on a VERY nice 1440p 27 inch, sweet spot for size/resolution IMO

This is what i was thinking, i should have stated the monitor will be 27 inch

will in say 2-3 months when the freesync models are all released will they be comparible to current prices of 1440p 60 hz or close to it?

and by this time next year will it not be regrettable decision not to get freesync?

Unless you're prone to noticing colour shift or do colour critical work the new 8 bit TN panels are pretty decent against IPS and for me I couldn't go back to a 60hz monitor, I had to use mine at 60hz for a day and it's unbelievable how things like even the windows mouse cursor stutter.

See this is what ive been hearing, once u go 144hz u nvr go back

I built the pc with future proofing in mind and not getting 144hz feels like im going against this

I'd at least get a monitor that supports freesync as that will eliminate some of the downsides of 60hz like noticeable tearing.

It's either 4k gsync/freesync or 1440p 144hz gsync/freesync for future proofing in my opinion.

Problem is different people have different levels of sensitivity to it as well - for me its like night and day 60Hz v 120Hz even on the desktop I find 120Hz smoother and more precise but not everyone will notice it.

From the description of your gaming I think you'd get the biggest benefit from higher image quality ideally you'd want to have a play with both to see what works best for you.

IMO for those games you mentioned, and if FPS is not your main game of choice, you'd be better off with 21:9 Freesync monitor.

Cheers guys

I can see given the games i play that i dont really need a 144hz monitor but id really hate to look back in the near future and think i should have got one!

Ill have to wait and see what new montiors are released in the next month or so

My favourite saying and I use it a lot is "It is better to have and not need, than to need and not have."

Buy as much as you can afford to. If you can afford it, buy the best you can.

As someone who's had a 120hz monitor and gone back to 60hz panel my personal feeling is that it doesn't really make much difference. Unless you use your pc for nothing other than playing fast paced FPS games I'd say go for for a nice 60hz 1440p IPS panel unless you're happy to wait, and pay the price premium, for faster IPS panels later in the year.

Oh, and ultrawide is awesome and a more worthwhile upgrade than 144hz IMO!

This! I made the "mistake" of going 144 with fps games not being my main style of play. I really didn't see the benefit as others would.

Then I went ultrawide :D

Doesn't ultra wide have some issues with certain games though? I can imagine it being great for movies but always imagine some games just looking kinda weird in that aspect ratio.

Totally agree, 144hz > Resolution

If you aren't going to play fps games a lot then I'd say it's probably more worthwhile for you to get a nice IPS panel rather than a 120/144Hz TN panel. There are high refresh rate IPS panels coming out soon though, so if you're willing to wait then that may be something you should consider.

Hz over Res in my opinion. No way could I go back to 60hz again, tried to a while back and didn't last long. Even browsing and general non FPS games feel a lot better at 144hz.

this is the same way i feel aswell, everything feels smoother not just gaming

fps games its night and day difference. racing games are better aswell.

4k isnt really a real choice or comfortable choice tbh. too early.

id get a 144hz screen then wait for a few years while they bring out powerful enough GPUS to run the 4k and above monitors.
