Why did my GPU start smoking

They have taken an rma on both?

yup, the bloke i spoke too gave me an rma number straight away and they were boxed up and in the post within 20 minutes. Really cant fault the customer service. They no longer stock my GPU though so it could be interesting to see how its dealt with.

I guess refund unless more come in stock between now and then? Maybe drop them a message in the CS section and see what they say

Damn, always sucks when your pride and joy is taken away. You seem sure that contact was full enough.

Did you notice anything unusual leading up to it?

Nope nothing unusual, I had just updated a couple of programs and lets windows do its restart. As soon as it went to power up again it started billowing smoke. It was very localized and the card still smelt of burning when I boxed it up this morning.

Im going to do a completely clean install when everything is sorted just to ensure it wasnt software induced (you never know)

My day has just gone out with a bang. my EVGA 970 FTW decided to take up smoking, im just trying to figure out if it is the gpu that has caused it or the mobo

Has anybody had this happen to them before?

I think your GPU has been hanging around with dodgy gypsy kids round the corner too much. This is what happened to my GPU. I made him eat the fags; he never smoked again! :p

More appropriately, that's pretty bad luck. Gotta love the service here though, I'm sure you'll get an equal or an even better card in return. Which 970 was it? Will be interesting to see what it gets swapped with. Unless they withhold some stock for replacements in situations like this.

I have the same problem. I bought one of my cards and then the 980 came out, mine then died and OCUK didn't have it in stock anymore. i wantde to pay the difference and upgrade to the 980, but their system couldn't to it - so they gave me a refund which I spent on the 980 instantly :)

It was an EVGA 970 FTW. It will be a shame if I cant get atleast an EVGA card as a replacement because the other I have a second one for SLI

IM gona go with it could be a bad PSU or there was something like possibly a random foreign object like a hair or something that was getting heated and decided to melt.

I was watching a thing the other day when a guys PSU had one bad connector and killed to ssd's because of a surge within the PSU and as a result lost everything. check the voltage of the PSU etc.
