nVidia announce the Titan X at GDC 2015

Yes it seems as if NVIDIA have all angles covered with Maxwell. Even a 8GB 980 would sell crazy if they wanted but I think they will make a small fortune off of GM200 first.
But could the 256bit memory bus on a GTX 980 be able to handle 8GB of vram ?

Look at the problems the 970 had with memory..

Not sure, but it's probably far easier to remove RAM than to add it, so a detuned Titan X at only 500 quid is a serious competitor to the 390X....

The 980 probably doesn't have enough grunt, plus according to Gibbo, Nvidia told him ``the 980 will never have 8GB RAM``.

the rumoured 390X is supposed to be 50% more powerful than a 290X, so this means it'll be more powerful than a 980 as well.

so if you think about it, a cheaper Titan X will need to have almost the same power as now, but much less RAM, because it wont be much more powerful than a 390X anyway... maybe 10%........ if that, because i bet AMD are trying to get more power out of the 390X right now..........i would be

but who the hell knows what's going on with that lot, because this TOTAL SILENCE is really damaging their business

I simply don't understand AMD, it's in the public domain that they are losing market share and losing money.

They allowed Nvidia to take huge bite of the market by not releasing the lower end 300 series cards to openly compete with Maxwell and now Nvidia have dropped a monster card on us for high end users and AMD still won't release anything about their high end 390X and even the biggest AMD fanboi will admit AMD need the 300 series to sell well.

The 300 series might end up a stonking good set of cards but silence in marketing to me speaks of issues with the product or it's them relying on Nvidia's greed to make a success of it because simply put if the TX comes out priced £750-£900 and we all know a 980Ti is coming I think AMD is dead in the water. If it's £1000+ then AMD are back in the game only because Nvidia opened the door.

Boxes of NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN-X Pile Up

Let us help you beat your Thursday morning blues with some eye-candy. An anonymous tipster sent us this picture of over two-dozen NVIDIA-reference GeForce GTX TITAN-X graphics card boxes piled up. We're not sure where it was taken, but given that it lacks any partner branding, it couldn't have come from an e-tailer's warehouse. Given this picture, a formal launch of the TITAN-X may not be too far away.

If they can put 4GB on a 960 and 8GB on the 980m they can definitely put 8GB on a 980. Gibbo has asked NVIDIA many times for 8GB 980s because he knows they would fly off the shelves.

NVIDIA are not silly, they know anyone with 8GB 980s in SLI would have zero care for a Titan X more expensive and slower. They will make a lot of $ out of GM200 first imo. The 4GB limit on the 980s will strengthen the itch to go with big Maxwell for those that want more vram. It is funny how "never" releasing 8GB 980s could change once they have made a lot of green from GM200 :D

You may find that using the full 8gb on 980s in SLI could be slower than using 8gb on a single Titan X as the wider bus would help a lot in moving that much data around.

Yes but only at extreme resolutions with ultra settings. You know first hand a 690 or dual 4GB 770s smoke a Titan in most cases. You also know that the 980s narrow bus performs better than expected, with the only game where I've seen crossfire 8GB 290X cards really catch up with 980 SLI was in Shadow of Mordor 8K(youwot) with the Ultra textures which are unplayable settings anyway. The 980s bus width is actually a significant improvement on the 680/770 256bit bus.

It rather defeats the point of having an 8gb 980 if you are not going to use 8gb.:)

It doesn't matter much how logical it seems to you or me but trust me Gibbo and NVIDIA know 8GB 980s would sell and thats the bottom line. When those 8GB 980 SLI users then see the Titan X performing slower in almost every situation at 4K then it is also illogical to go buy one.

You are clearly missing the point...one of the main reason Nvidia they have been delibrately holding back the vram amount of the mainstream top-end cards for a while now is precisely because they want to push users into buying Titan because mainstream card not giving them the amount of vram they need

That's a point I was trying to make in post #550 sir :)

I am not just trying to say a theoretical 8GB 256Bit 980 x 2 will beat a Titan X in almost all real world gaming situations because thats a no brainer.

I'm just trying to get across that the "premiumness" and desire/demand these 12Gb Titan Xs have will be less strong if people didn't feel so contrained by the limit of 4GB on the 980 and I think NVIDIA are smart for this to make us want the upgrade even more at any cost.
