Post what headphones you used for gaming.

Still using a good old Sennheiser PC360 headset. Bought it a few years ago, and still going strong. Lovely headset. Open back, so you can wear it for hours.

My gaming cans are

HD558's (which I've still yet to mod into 598's. which is a 2 minute mod which involves removing some stickers inside the cover)

Q701's when I can be bothered to double amp my mixamp with a schiit vali (these are still stock not been bass modded)

I have HD600's, DT770's and a few others but none of them come close to the above 2 for gaming.

I'm still surprised by how good HD595's were for gaming. In the pure bang for buck states you can get a pair of HD595 or HD555's (which can be modded to 595's by removing a sticker) for about £50 these days second hand.

Nothing will come close to them for gaming for that kind of money. You need to buy something from AKG X7XX range for another £100 on top and get a decent amp as well to beat them which is a lot of money for very small improvements.

Everyone will have their own preferences but I honestly think in 90% of cases Sennheiser HD 5XX range are the ones to go for in terms of gaming. Easy to drive, nice open sound, picks out details wonderfully and not too expensive.

If you have a decent amp then get one of the AKG X7XX range.

These also happen to be what I use.

AD700x is supposed to be really good but it's a love it or hate it type of headphone. HE500's I would say would be unbearable for long gaming sessions I owned HE400's and it felt like I was wearing a helmet after a while, they were huge and cumbersome and not the most comfortable of headphones. I would never use my HD600 for gaming so I doubt HD800's or high end audiophile quality stuff is any better. The max you should spend imo is £200 ish for gaming headphones. But the difference between a set of £200 headphones and a second hand pair of HD555 or HD595's for £50 in terms of competitive gaming will be none. That's how good they are at picking out details and identifying footsteps. Just because a can is good for music doesn't mean it's good for gaming. Competitive gaming requires a very wide soundstage, minimal bass and great for detail. Therefore you wouldn't use Basshead headphones for competitive gaming.

If your looking for immersive gaming cans then get DT770's or Fidelio X1/X2's

Dude I have HD 598's...I was just interested in what others were using...after the NS1000 DAC problem I had.....Bought some 429's for 24 quid for my second PC and they are oustanding for games and music for the cost for my second pC...even better with a Fiio E6

I bought my 598's from Jungle france for 77 :)

HD598's suit gaming extremely well I would say any upgrades would be very minimal at best. I wouldn't worry about what others are using.

Some people on here will be using terrible surround sound headphones for example. In fact I have used such headphones in the past some Razer ones which cost like £120+ as well. truly awful gaming headphones compared to what I have now.

Have you modded your 555's? AKG's would be an upgrade but overall I doubt it would make any difference to your gaming skills, just that it would all sound slightly better.

I have HD558's and I only use my Q701's when I can be bothered to double amp. So pretty much identical to what your suggesting.

i use my hd600's and a headbox II amp.
originally bought for my hifi but don't really use it that much these days so its on the pc instead.

I have just replaced my Plantronics Gamecom 780 headset, with Razer Blackshark 2.0 and have to say I love them.

I originally bought some hyperX cloud 2’s, but the virtual 7.1 surround sound was rubbish, I thought it was better on my old 780’s. So I ended up sending them back, as it was more of a side grade, then a upgrade.

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250 Ohm running through an Essence STX, (Swapping for a sound Blaster X7 soon though).

I have a set of AKG Q701 and my good old set of Goldring DR100, for multiplayer I rate the Goldrings over the AKG, unfortunately they have long been discontinued. I do have a brand new pair of DR150's but they aren't as good for multi.
(oh how I wish I could buy a brand new pair of 100's )

run them from a Pro-ject Dacbox-s into a Headbox-s would like something a little better but funds don't allow at the moment :(

sennheiser g4me one, However seriously considering changing to Audio Technica ATH-ADG1.

Not being one to stop you spending that sort of cash on products we sell but you could consider some very good non gaming solutions for that money.

a mod mic is £40 or a snowball desktop mic is (45-55) I'll be the first to admit the mod mic isn't as good as the mic on your sennheisers but then nothing is that I've used in terms of Boom mic's. Sennheisers noise cancelling on that microphone is second to none imo as soon as I switched to the mod mic whilst the sound quality is way above acceptable everyone on the server noticed my mic had changed.

so for £210 you could look at

AKG Q701 (200) K702 (150) K612 (100ish)

Audio Technica AD700X (164)

Beyerdynamic DT 770 (120 ish) Closed back

Phillips fidellio X1 (not so good for competitive gamign but for fun gaming they are ace) (150-180) and X2's for (200-210)

Senheiser HD598 (150)

If you keep yoru eyes on the members market you may spot some AKG K7XX or other second hand gems

Have a look through RyanR1987's review thread or MAd Lust Envy's Gaming headset thread over on head fi

Or just ask in this sub section plenty of people use non gaming headsets for gaming.
