So what to get?
Asus Maximus VII Hero Intel Z97 or MSI Z97 Gaming 7 Intel Z97?
Going with:
i5-4690K Devil's Canyon
zotac gtx 970 amp extreme
Crucial MX100 512GB
Avexir Core Red Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17200C11 2133MHz

what do you think would be best?

Hero - or the cheaper Ranger or Z97 Gamer depending on requirements.
Using Ranger on 2 systems with i7-4790K although not overclocked yet, and the boards have been excellent. Plus Asus use Intel lan and MSI normally use Killer which puts me off them.

You can avoid using the Killer network faff by just installing the driver and not the software for the lan, there is a thread on here all about it somewhere
the MSI has good placement of its PCIE X1 slots if you where going to use a sound card also

If you think another board would be better I'm open to suggestions. Was not planning on putting in a separate sound card or network card so on board needs to be good.

Do you like gigabyte?

The black edition boards have a 5yr warranty and an exchange programme to get you a new board within 3yrs.

The SOC Force is an over clocking board that last time I checked was the dominant Z97 board at HWbot.

I must admit I have no preference on brand, I like the long warranty (duse not not seem to mention warranties on here for most mother boards) I do like the plain black of the black editions.

am quite happy with mine Asus Maximus VII Hero Intel Z97 had no problems with it,having said that the gigabyte offer looks very good to be true 2 for 1 but their is always an catch with these type of deals :

The new GIGABYTE warranty is intended to add a new product feature to all boards of the Z97 Black Edition line. Therefore, this product feature is connected to the life cycle of these boards.
Aside from all of this, GIGABYTE is free in their decision to change all kinds of voluntary features and services at any time without notice. so this offer can stop at anytime without notice leaving the 2 for 1 offer not variable

Following the conditions and terms for this upgrade service, the customer has to send the exchange board to GIAGYBTE with the original carton and all included accessories. In case that within the 3 years of usage for example, the customer loses a cable and or connector, GIGABYTE will handle the exchange in a fair and customer oriented matter. Even if the customer loses or presents the original carton in a less than suitable condition complete with missing accessories, GIGABYTE will find a fair solution in that singular case.this can mean anything from charges for missing or damage original carton

it is alway best to read the small prints, don't get me wrong gigabyte motherboards are good as i have had a few in the past

The 2for1 offer is planed to last until the the BK boards are available, once registered (to get the extra warranty from the stock 3year warranty) your upgrade option is safe.

Hmm looks like a good deal just the 3 boards in it? What's the main difference between the UD3H and the UD5H can't really justify the £300+ on the other one.

So if I'm right the main difference is the LAN getting both 1 x Qualcomm and Intel is there any big difference between them? The 5 seems to be the better board and the extra what £20 is nothing really so might get it anyway just wondered what the difference in LAN was?

Intel LAN is generally considered the best, so the UD5H having the extra qualcomm one is a bit of a moot point, but it does obviously give you more connectivity (add a NAS to that port and have internet on the Intel NIC for example.

So the UD5H also has some more SATA ports (from a 3rd party chip again, so not native like the Intel ones) and there is possibly a difference in the power phases feeding the CPU which is not listed.

If you look around the CPU area you will see the UD5H is more busy, it looks to be using a 16phases VRM setup VS the 8phases of the UD3H.

The UD5H also has BIOS switch (so you can easily flip between the two) and reset/clearCMOS buttons etc.

as i mentioned : GIGABYTE is free in their decision to change all kinds of voluntary features and services at any time without notice.

so the option is not safe

It is safe, I already asked this Q to the rep.

an rep is just an rep he gets paid by commision @ the end of the day what gets said from above stands the rep got no say in it . gigabyte have cover them self's in black and white in the t&c. am not saying anything is going to happen down the road but no one can see in the future can they . this is why they have covered them self's.as i said always read the small print. the 2 for 1 is an very clever sales pitch to generate sales

if it is safe why have they put this ? i say it again

QUOTE : GIGABYTE is free in their decision to change all kinds of voluntary features and services at any time without notice.

by puting this in the t& c it covers them against any law of claims against them. its an very clever wording

my little rant is over now am not going to say any more on this matter as i must go and give some flowers and chocs to my mum :)
