Stuck between these two cards. Will be used for 1080p gaming, no 4k.

Cooler Master V550S
Asus H81I-PLUS
Pentium G3258 @ 4.3GHz
WD Black 1TB
8GB HyperX RAM

Which would give the better performance ? The 285 is slightly cheaper than the 280 albeit it has 1GB less VRAM, but does that really matter at 1080p ?

I'd splash out a few more quid and get the 280X.

Not sure on the differences, but it's got an X (that's worth a few quid) and benchmarks tend to be a little higher.

On this sort of setup I'd have thought a decent 550w would be okay, though I'm sure someone more knowledgable could verify this?

2gb is fine for most games at 1080p, but id want 3gb for longevity.

The 285 has newer features over the older 280 cards like vsr downsampling and freesync.

A 4gb 285 would be great, its a shame that there are only 2gb versions.

The 285 is now cheaper than the 280 which says a lot but it is a decent 1080p in the same way a 960 is. I'd choose the 280 just because that extra memory will allow you to choose higher settings in some games.

The 280X is better but priced much higher (£180) and is still a lot slower than the 290.

Really for mid-range gaming the 280 is the best mix of value and performance but does lack freesync.
