My sister in law has brought her pc around for me to fix (yet again). What she did was take some pictures off her phone and I presume she yanked the USB cable out of the pc while Windows was still accessing it. It throws up the above error along with a load of text relating to a USB storage device and won't boot. I am guessing the MBR is corrupted as it does the bios post and then throws up this error and won't go any further. Even changing the boot device to dvd won't get past this message.

My question is, to fix this will I be able to repair the MBR by plugging her SSD into my pc and using the repair tool on the windows disk (at no risk to my installation though)? Failing that it looks like I will have to plug the SSD into my pc and wipe it then do a clean install.

Even changing the boot device to dvd won't get past this message.

I think you must be doing something wrong because you wouldnt get the message if it booted your dvd in the dvd drive. It would only ignore the DVD in the drive if it was, not bootable, not connected, or you missed the message that comes up sometimes asking you to press a key.

I take it you have put a Windows dvd in the drive then booting to DVD? Have you tried bringing the bootmenu up, often F12 then booting to the DVD drive.

The MBR is not necessarily corrupted if it is referring to a USB storage device. Are there any USB storage devices plugged in ? First thing would be to check this and remove them before trying to boot the PC.

I went into her pc's bios and changed the primary boot from the SSD to the DVD dive. I stuck the Windows DVD in the drive saved the changes and rebooted. All that happens is it gets past the bios post and the error message comes up and I can't do anything else. It won't even boot the DVD. No USB drives are connected. I suspect thats part of the problem as it says to plug the device back in and reboot. She says she has tried this but going from past experience I bet she hasn't. I am going to get her to come back tomorrow with her phone and plug it in, reboot and see what happens. If it works it works. If it doesn't I will wipe the SSD. She won't lose anything as I set up her docs, photo's and music on her hdd.

To make things worse her and her husband are heavy smokers and the damn pc stinks to high heaven and has made me feel sick!!

Is that before or after the Windows startup logo appears ? Can you get into safe mode. I take it the error is a BSOD. Reason I ask is if you are getting a BSOD then it doesnt sound like a MBR error because if it was you would get this on a black screen and it might even be a hardware issue.

Also I have never seen an error that shows this

I suspect thats part of the problem as it says to "plug the device back in and reboot"

because removable drives are not included in the MBR because they are, removable and the MBR is just for fixed disks.

It doesn't get to windows, as soon as the bios post is done the message comes up. It's not a bsod (it's a black screen) and I can't get into safe mode. Like I said, I can't do anything at all. All caused by her yanking out a usb cable while transferring a picture from her phone to the pc. She thought it was finished but obviously it wasn't. She is bringing her phone around tomorrow so I will see if it can be fixed like the message says (it says try plugging the usb device back in and rebooting). At this stage I really couldn't care less if it needs a wipe and clean install. I feel sick as a pig from the fag smell from the damn thing.
