IIRC the ejection mechanism in those things was basically, reach up, open canopy, undo restraints, stand up, jump.

Either very lucky, or very skilled, or probably both if that wasn't intentional.

Most probably from trees/shrubs. Low enough to the ground for the underside of the aircraft to be getting grass stains and the prop blades would contact the ground, which I imagine would be a serious hindrance to further flying.
