Nintendo's new console - Nintendo NX

If I was to guess I'd say they're going to attempt an all-in-one - a handheld system you can "dock" at home with the dock hooked up to the TV.

Walk in the front door - dock the handheld - pick up your traditional controller and off you go.

It ticks the home console box, it ticks the handheld box, it ticks the off tv play box (take it out of the dock and sit on the sofa).

That said - this being Nintendo it could be something completely out of the park - they can be a bit random can Nintendo!

I cant see how that would work, it wouldn't be powerful enough for a home console and handheld fans would just buy a new 3ds

A console with similar power to PS4 would end up just having loads of Assassins creed and EA sports games which isn't what most people want a Nintendo console for.
I would like to see them get 3rd parties back on board with games similar to Skyrim or Fallout though

You're not going to get those games without the power in the first place though. I'm not sure why you think it being more powerful would just mean it becomes another AC or EA Sports machine, quite a bizarre conclusion to jump to.

It being Nintendo, they'll call it the Wii [something], confuse everyone as to what it actually is and ship it without a power cable because you should already have one.

This definitely looks like it's to sit alongside the 3DS and Wii U.

But Nintendo have already separately entered the phone/tablet arena - that's been announced.

The NX cannot be a tablet.

Higher spec console, better spec than PS4 / Xbone?

Good to see Nintendo planning ahead already, Wii U is good imho but has failed to capture the market. better to move on within next couple of years, especially if they can make the best Wii U titles compatible with the next Nintendo system.

Because if the WiiU was more powerful 3rd parties would have been flooding it with the usual cross platform games. As it stands they have pretty much forgotten about Wiiu and its forced Nintendo to either come up with new games or let it fail. There is no reason why games such as Fallout wouldn't work on wiiu, it runs on xbox 360 after all.

They have some fairly hefty cash reserves although this has declined over last 4 years so they do have plenty of scope to chuck cash at a new system.

They need to learn their lessons from the WiiU, proper marketing, target the right market, drop the gimmicks and focus on what they are good at which is excellent first party games and good local coop/multiplayer. If they bring out a console/system which ticks these boxes it could be a huge success. Just look at how Playstation 4 is winning the console war at present, it was their advertising and focus on being a "pure" games console rather than the Xbox approach of an all-inclusive "media" experience.

Not a chance, imo, of Nintendo even attempting to play spec wars with Microsoft and Sony - it's a war they just can't win.

Why wouldn't they win? They have better first party exclusives by a country mile. The main hurdle would be the online service - something they've been remiss in developing for far too long.

The big problem Nintendo face now is that gamers aren't playing their games any more. When I was a kid EVERY other kid I knew that played video games had played Super Mario Bros. The same with Zelda, Metroid. By the time the SNES came out these IPS were entrenched in gamers minds and the demand for more was insane. Now fast forward to today - relatively few WiiUs have been sold compared to the other consoles. The same was true of the GC and I suspect Wii if we're counting the no. of hardcore gamers that bought the console. Even the mighty N64 (the best Nintendo have ever been imo) was eclipsed by the Playstation. Kids today are growing up having never played Mario, Zelda or Metroid. They're looking forward for the next MGS, Halo, or CoD. Whenever you meet a die hard Nintendo fan the chances are they're scarily close to 40 years old! Nintendo are seriously at risk losing their trump card - producing games that every gamer must play.

If the WiiU was comparable in power to the PS4 and had Destiny, I wouldn't own a PS4. Imagine if Nintendo coincided a console launch with CoD, Fifa etc as well as a ridiculously good looking Zelda. It would fly off the shelves. Kids would start playing their games again, fall in love with them, and Nintendo would be back on track. As things stand they're going to slowly dwindle away and eventually do a Sega. Or become software only, but that's another thread.

Honestly,

I'd like to see them go head on with Sony and M$.
Fully hardcore developed hardware, software deals and a much improved network.

That plus their regular 1st party software could create interesting results.

No more gimmicks.. hardcore gaming please.

Oh.. and Destiny lol

Why not? Other than the Wii and Wii U, Nintendo's hardware has been comparable to the competitors.

It's not like Nintendo design the hardware themselves, AMD is likely going to make them another APU. They just need to stop being so cheap and stop wasting so much of the hardware budget on underused crap like the Wii U Gamepad.

When the PS4 launched in the UK the Wii U was only officially £50 cheaper, that's embarrassing considering the spec difference and the fact the PS4 has a built in hard drive.

You know full well the Wii U screen is what eats up most of the cost price, and so you compare it to a console that a) Sony makes no profit on and b) has no screen.
