So I purchased a 290x of ebay as faulty with the seller stated it just black screen from time to time which is common on 290x card but thought I would take a punt on it. When I got the card it would only post at random times, power but no output to monitor. Anyway cut a long story short I sent it to Gigabyte and they have said they wont fix it because someone already has tried.

This is the image they sent back, can someone tell me what part this is connected to and what repair could have been done.

Cant see on that, need a close up really, if its pointing to what looks to be a smd cap then unlikely to be done via hand anyway. Though some would try, me included if nothing was around the part, unlike that!.

Did it have those screws missing when you sent it?

I'm guessing the original owner swapped the cooler and then didn't have the original screws nor did he feel like hunting down 7 extra screws.
From this thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18643771
Gigabyte are okay with you removing the cooler as long as its reinstalled correctly and in this case I guess it hasn't been.
As for "REPAIR BY THEMSELF" i think that says but it could just be they've been damaged by the previous owner hence why they sold it.

They must scrutinise the card closely to identify the fault or have some kind of diagnostic software that points to the component in error.

The card came with an after market cooler which i removed and stuck the old cooler on but it came with no screws so used my own. Not sure what they are talking about as it was costing me for them to fix it.

I told them the story of the card before I sent it regarding the cooler etc, they said they will not replace the card as I don't have a receipt but said they will fix it at a cost. The point of sending it to them is that they would have the parts to fix at my cost.

Now they've decided they will not repair it at cost or have they got confused and they think its a warranty return? Or are they saying its not worth trying to re-repair something someone else has already tried?

If you bake a card you totally screw up the BGA. If this card has been baked they cannot repair it without removing every single last solder ball and they won't do that.

That might be what they're getting at here. Trust me, if they even think that card has shared a shelf with the cookies you've had it.

Ah I guess some people will hear "this worked for me" any try anything. I've never even considered baking anything other than food. I did try the old Xbox Red ring of death fix but I used my soldering iron on the heatsink for that. worked for 10mins then went again so it went in the bin. Looking at the (once white) label on the right hand side I would guess it did get some form of heat thrown at it.

So I got the card back today and have looked at the failed repair and does look like someone has tried to do something. Is this something a 3rd party person could maybe sort out?

As for the screw damage cant see what they are on about. I think any card that has a 3rd party screw in it gets written off.

To be honest if you are going to throw it, get a cap(Correct one) and have a go with a good soldering iron, don't put it in your main rig, try in a older/not bothered about comp first.
