Is it worth holding off getting a 980 in case there's a 980ti? I was going to buy today.

If you have the patience yes. The problem is the cut down Titan X could take up to 3-4 months. The 780 came out 3 months after the original Titan. The latest it will come should be just after the 390X release. 780Ti came out literally a few days after the 290 and beat it.
I loved my old 3008wfp. Especially how it would creak and make cracking noises as it expanded and shrunk due to heat.
