TBF, he does have proper hills where he lives. Admittedly not bleedin' great mountains, but I'm willing to bet your overall average speed for the year has dropped since you moved on from Flatsville, Panshire.

Yes tru dat :(. My average speed is usually something horrific now.

If it lives up to their claims I'd be interested. Carrying around heavy duty Abus and Kryptonite locks is annoying.

Yes it will be interesting to see the outcome, I've followed it.

I've often had a butchers at the stuff we produce and seen how glass/carbon fibres are used for tying things together. Hadn't made the leap to a bike lock though, damnit.

Good effort, I'll review mine:

My goals for next year:
Become a Cat 3 within the first half of the year - Done in January
Go sub 22min on a 10 - Nowhere near yet, got a 10 coming up Easter weekend, so this shall be the first test
Get my FTP above 350w - Getting closer, up around 300w, way ahead of where I was this time last year. Scheduled a test next week, which will be interesting after big volume week in spain
Not sure on mileage target, will have done nearly 5000km this year, so probably more like 8000km - Well on track, 1512miles YTD
Buy a new road bike to replace my ageing Giant - Done, new Cervelo S3 :D

i don't have any formal goals this year. Maybe I should.
Sort of disillusioned with Sportives really - I don't see the point of paying to ride on open roads unless its an area of the country that is particularly scenic or challenging. then you also got the logistics faff of getting there and back. With that in mind I am trying to plan a couple of weekends. One in the peaks and maybe one in Nice if I can get cheapish flights. Seems like Mrs Calpol has booked a few days away in Cropton in 10 days also so I hope to get my bike out and about the North Yorks Moors. I think I can tick off 2/3 of the 100 Climbs by doing that.

Mileage isn't a steadfast goal this year but I expect it to be in the region of 4500. As for speed - well I am always hoping to go faster and I would say I am significantly ahead of 2014 at present largely thanks to Trainer Road's more focused riding.

Really I should MTFU and enter next years Etape. I've been scared to commit to something like that up until now but logically I am a good enough bike rider to be able to do it with similar training as I do now. Fatter, less fit people seem to do it. Unfortunately with me I am quite competitve and if I can't be above average at anything I tend to lose interest. Sometimes I muse over being able to just go out and ride my bike without reference to average speed, strava segments, watts/kg!

I did a couple of club TTs in the past and some of my buddies are getting into it in a big way, buying the skin suits and TT bikes. I don't think its for me though. More tempted by a bit of cyclocross racing!

I reckon I have probably got 3-4 more years of riding at a half decent level before age takes over (44) and then I'd prob quite like to do some coaching with youngsters.

Maybe I will make organising an OCUK ride out a goal for 2015

I was considering an aim of 28,000 miles this year, a sort of faux trip around the world, but I've missed almost two months of cycling through my accident so that's probably off until next year.

Goals are:
-To become a Grands Maître du Fêlés du Grand Colombier (all 4 passes-summit in a day)
-Climb Ventoux in <1hr30.

28,000 miles  thats huge!

Really would like a go at ventoux. Might look into a weekend in the Alps in summer.

My current goals are:

- complete London Tri olympic distance without drowning
- get as close as possible to 2h30m in the 56 mile cycle leg of Staffordshire 70.3 team relay

Both will be challenging I'd say since firstly I'm not great at running and I'm terrible at swimming! Secondly, the average Pro time for the half-Ironman cycle is 2h20 and I'm nowhere near pro-level! However, I also don't need to do a swim so can give my all to the bike leg.

350W (virtual) FTP and double my climbing from last year are my goals. I don't care about hitting a mileage target this year (though don't expect it to be much different to last year's 10k miles).

I'd be interested in the ride out, providing I don't slow you all down too much :p

Guy who I work with is cycling and happily does 70+ mile loops with 'his boys' (ones Marines and the others Navy I think) and he's 63 soon... It's never too late, he's fit as a fiddle and would put me to shame!

my goals -;

keep cycling.. the end.

ha.

Similar here, my main aim is to carry on doing what I'm doing - branching out, hill climbing more, doing some routes/hills I've driven/know about and getting out with some group rides (already done 1 of those). 2015 (in theory) will be my 'first full year' riding with intent, as for 8+ months of 2014 I only rode my commute on a hybrid with no real interest in any other riding! :)

I paid £46 for the pair of new garmin sensors from Amazon which I thought was a cracking deal.

Amazing deal and you've got me thinking now lol!

Although I'll probably wait for my GSC10 to die first ;)

Popped out again after work for some miles on the road. Overcast mainly and thought I may have needed lights as i was going round but didn't have any  Quite pleased with things this evening. Legs don't seem to work till about halfway round but felt good by the end of the ride. For some reason i though the route i took was shorter than it was 10 rather than 13 but pleased with the time / average speed and got a pb to boot.

Tomorrow I'll take as a break and hope to be out twice over the weekend to get about 50 miles done at the very least.

That Synapse is only available in a tiny frame size. Were you happy with the geometry of the Felt? The Z series is endurance focussed, similarly to the Synapse, so you're put in a bit more of a relaxed position than a dedicated race bike. There are quite a few options on there, maybe worth considering a steel "cyclocross" bike like the Genesis Croix de Fer if you really want an all rounder.

Hmm, didn't notice the frame size on that synapse.

I have been considering the cyclocross concept and while I have a mountain bike I don't cycle that distances I would on a road bike and I avoid bits I would enjoy on a road bike because it's a road bike.

So I have seen this one: http://bikereplacement.co.uk/p74429/Merida-Cyclo-Cross-500-2015-Cyclocross-Bike.aspx

Shimano 105 etc

Could I still remain relatively competitive with a cyclocross?

competitive to what? you can't enter road races if you have discs, but with road tyres and a carefully set up position, ratio for ratio, a cross bike shouldn't be any slower than a road bike really
