Spec me anything that isn't a Peugeot 307

So my lovely and mundane Peugeot 307 has just about passed the 100k mark! I picked it up nearly two years ago after a wrote off may first car by planting it into the side of a focus (totally my fault! *hand up*)

Anyway, I feel driving this thing has matured me somewhat as a driver, no longer am I such a risk taker, and no longer do I kerb my wheels on a regular basis :D
It has served its purpose and lowered my premiums to less than £500 a year
And put an end to my little "god complex" on the road.

I would like to get shot of it around about next year when my insurance is up for renewal and I have about 2 years of no claims under my belt and get something a bit better.

I'm moving in with the girlfriend this summer, she drives a Daihatsu Charade, its quite likely i'll end up on the insurance for that,
Which will probably cover me for round the town driving and commuting the few miles to work each day,

I would like to replace the 307 with something that is:

- More fun to drive (Just about anything that isn't a 307 I think!)

- Ideally good for long distance/reliable

- A bit sporty

- Ideally around about 5k

- Cheapish to run

Before the inevitable "get a Focus" suggestion comes up,
I really really hate them! With a special kind of vitriol I normally reserve for KAs and Micras, not sure why, probably due to the fact I wrote one off...

I do like the look of something like a Mondeo ST220 though :)

As I said before, I am looking at replacing it next year but I like to plan ahead with these things!

Mazda 6 MPS? I wouldn't personally classify it as cheap to run, but if you're looking at an ST220 it's worth looking at as an alternative

You should be able to pick up a nice ST220 for 3-4k. Fits your requirements perfectly and they really are rather cheap to run, all things considered. Being a 3.0 V6 they're not the lightest of petrol consumers but if you're not doing many miles then it's not an issue. On a run you can get 35mpg+ anyway.

The Mazda 6 MPS is another option, but aren't drivetrain issues quite common?

In terms of Golf GTIs, it doesn't look like £5k is anything other than shed territory yet. Plenty of nice enough-looking prefacelift mk2 Octavia VRS' though it would seem. It won't be as fast or as well-equipped or as sonorous as the ST220 though (especially once the ST220 is fitted with the wonderful-sounding JP exhaust).

Thanks for the suggestions so far!
Just to clarify, when I said cheap to run I was thinking more in terms of consumables costs, brakes, tyres and other things like that!

I will actually be moving much closer to work so I will probably be doing about 4000 miles less a year (scary when you count it up!) so thirsty isn't too much of a problem :)

They do remind me a bit of the Lotus Elan :)
The classic one that is, not that awful 90s thing!

And I suppose someone somewhere might make a removable luggage rack for it!

I will add it to the list of possibilities!
