Getting organised for this title now and wondering which is the best route to take, don't really want to wait a month or so after the title has been released to see how the 390X's compaire (I can trade up anyway if need be), but the highest change of using SLI/Crossfire is quite important. Currently using CF290X 4GB's which I have sold for £360.

8GB's of CF 290X's are in the running @ £580 (£220 upgrade cost)

or

4GB of SLI 980's @ £880 (£520 upgrade cost)

or

Titan X @ £870 (£510 upgrade cost)

What resolution are you thinking of running Witcher 3 ?

Can't be 100% sure what performance will be like, but we can guess or you just go overkill with hardware and be done with it :)

Well, having just come from 290 crossfire, you likely know what the possibilities of having a working crossfire profile on launch are.

I have 3 8gb 290x's, and currently considering the Titan myself. Not for witcher 3, but for nearly everything really.

It's a pity, as I was really hoping to not change until the next gen with die shrinks had been out a bit, but currently two of my cards are just going to waste most of the time...

Witcher 3 at a decent detail level@4k?? I'd say 2 Titans minimum!

As for AMD cards running this in Crossfire anytime soon, forget it. Maybe 6 months after launch...

As per the title buddy 4K res ;-)

Sorry went straight into reading your post.

4K Uber with all bells and whistles ?

I would guess you are looking at 2x Titan X's to push over 60 FPS.

Performance overclocked for the Titan X would be roughly a sidegrade from R9-290s but with more VRAM for 4K.

People have already mentioned that crossfire support will be meh.... like usual.

This is also my problem with my CF setup, I purchased the cards last April and gamed for 3/4 months on 2 cards, I stopped playing BF4 when some new top titles were released and my 2nd card has been sat collecting dust since for 6/7 months. When CF or SLI works it can't be beaten as long as you don't mind waiting for drivers to painfully be released or 25FPS @ 4K.

Witcher 2 does run okish for me at 4K on Crossfire R9-290s though graphics are dated while driver and optimisations are the best they can ever be I guess.

Witcher 3 will be a whole different beast imo...

So I think it basically comes down to risking SLI with the 980's and having a bit more performance or go Titan X and see how it overclocks and do away with driver worries and mircostuttering.

VRAM is your issue with SLI GTX980 @ 4K not drivers, grunt and microstutter :)

You will get really mad if you start hitting VRAM bottlenecks 2-3 months into upgrading.

Agreed

As with the original Titan, I think you're going to need 2 TitanX to actually benefit from the extra Vram.

It's becoming quite clear the 4Gb just isn't going to cut it at 4K if you like your eye candy (hence why they went 4K in the first place)

I can't really get my head round spending my money on 2XTitan X's, I love PC gaming, but not quite that much, one is all I will buy for the next 6 months or so.

Yeah that price tag is meh... I got one for now and will probably get one later down the road.

Spending 2K for 2 GPUs isnt easily justifiable :(

Crossfire is something you own, but it cant be used, so I think it'll have to be the Titan X, what would you choice be people if you were me.

Avoided saying that as some people will probably jump me and say I'm a raging fanboy or something. :p
