Insurance isn't due for renewal until June I believe, let me give you a few facts:-

I'm 23 (24 at end of August)
Passed my test 14/01/2009 and held a clean licence ever since
6 Years no claims
Standard Mk5 Golf Plus 2.0 TDi
Do around 10k a year including commuting.
Don't live in a rough area, really... Peterborough.
Paid £550 with Hastings (my current insurer) fully comp.
Usually have my parents as named drivers, both clean licence holders for over 25 years each

I'm still getting quotes of over £600, and friends of mine, with much higher performance cars, 3 litre and above, V8's etc, are paying roughly the same, some of them have points! and less no claims, and been driving exactly the same amount of time as me, am I seriously doing something wrong, I always feel that insurance companies are out to screw me, despite the fact I've never caused anyone a problem, apart from call up the company with the cheapest quote and purchase it, then do it again the following year.

Help me out here please

£600 seems reasonable for insurance at 23?

I think his point is that his friends have much more exotic/expensive/premium cars and pay similar amounts.

But tbh our age (I'm 22) the majority of the cost is for who we are (young men) rather than what we drive.

Correct sir, friend of mine has a Renault 5 Turbo thats running around 206bhp that he uses in summer generally, his daily is a 1.9 Mk1 Seat leon Fr, remapped, hybrid turbo, full exhaust, fmic, putting out similar power, pays £500 for both at 24, just got a quote from Aviva for the Golf, £1104.67! They must not want the business

Try paying 1k at 28 :rolleyes:that will really make u mad lol.
It's all on the area and the statistics of that postcode.
I think insurance has risen over the last 12 months. I have just got my 5 yrs no claims which should technically give me 75% discount as apposed to 4yrs 50% but come my renewal last week it has only gone down £50. Now last time I checked another 25% discount for getting my 5yrs no claims should amount to more than £50 off
I'm in Liverpool and I work with people who live 20 mins away from me that only pay half what I pay!

£1k at 28 is crazy. I was 27 when my insurance renewed last November; £256 for my Mazda3 2.0 Sport, 6 years NCB. I think it was something like £320 the year before. My postcode does help though, when I moved up here from High Wycombe I still had a 1.6 Astra and it went down over £100 straight away.

That... my friend, is ridiculous

I would say what your paying is not too bad for 23 on a 2.0TD. It is annoying when Friends etc are paying less for faster cars but it's all on the postcode. As I said guys who live 20 mins drive from me only pay half what I pay. The way insurers get there quote prices is ridiculous.
I have known people get more cars stolen in what's classed as posh safe area's as to me there targeted more due to theives wanting expensive cars compared to where I am.

Frustrating to say the least...

I'm also 23 and I just got insured on a 350z for £530 with 4 years no claims bonus with my dear mother as a named driver :p

It can vary a lot for the simplest things. You might live near your friends for example, but if its a different post code then it could make quite a difference. Occupation as well, I doubt you all do the same job.

I believe my post code may be a category 3 (lack of a better phrase) out of 7 is it? So reasonable but could still be better.

Tbh I wouldn't have though occupation would go that far into it, I'm a leisure centre manager, mate works for some sort of fabrication, cnc machines etc, something along those lines

Changing my occupation from retail drone to Police Staff attracts a premium increase of £8 for me. Would've assumed it'd go down.

There is no one size fits all for "should be paying £x at y years old for z car" though obviously your own age, car and where you live are a big part of the insurance lottery mix.

Just minimise the cost for what you have, and only look at it when you're nearing renewal as priced tend to swing significantly through the year.

So other things that can make a difference:

- With and without named drivers. Some insurers know its a fiddle to get youngsters premiums down and so ignore it or penalise you.
- Do you park on a drive, in a garage or on the road.
- 3 months ahead is a bit far to be looking. They know you're window shopping. Try a month before renewal and the pricing should be keener.

600 quid isn't that bad for your age. You should see it drop once you are over 25.

i would say your lucky!
Im 27 and pay £700 for a 1.4 k11 micra! thats with 3 years no claims, garaged with wife and mum on the policy!

Comparing insurance quotes with friends and people on the internet is one of the most pointless exercises known to man. You will often find that people boasting that they have very cheap insurance at a young age on a fast car will often have it insured for about 2000 miles a year with a £1000 excess.

Exactly this.

There's just far too many factors that people dont tell you about that will make a difference.

I was always puzzled by how little some of my friends pay for insurance, then I realised they're fronting

For its worth I pay £500 at 23

1.8 MX5
Parked on road in Northampton.
£500 total excess
5k miles SDPC
Parents as named drivers
Windscreen fitter
4 years NCB
License held since Oct 2010
