just got a refurbished GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5 on fleabay for £65 what would be the better cpu to use the 6300 or the 8320e I am using an r9 280x graphics card mostly use pc for gaming any advice would be great

I'm not an AMD expert at present as I've not had one since the 1090T. However given the small difference in price I'd be leaning toward the 8320E as it has 8 threads, and despite the lower stock clock speed it can be overclocked easily I believe.

According to gigabyte's website your board will need the F12 BIOS to run this CPU.

The board should be good for an fx8 since it has 8+2 vrms, but you will want to check you have the latest bios and which rev board to check if there are any known issues.

The 8320e is the best value for money and will generally clock to 4.4-4.6 with reasonable volts and cooling (CM Hyper evo 212, Raijintek EreBoss), higher and it all depends on cooling/setup due to the voltage increase and extra heat to deal with. This all cost more of course, so it depends on what you want to spend. Small fans over the vrms is highly recommended anyway.

Which cooler are you planning to use?

The 6300 is the choice if you want to save 30ish quid, but IMO the 8320e is the best option.

using a coolermaster V8 as it was free when I bought my case. I currently have a AMD Phenom II X4 965 would it be worth upgrading?

I think you will be fine with that cooler, looks like a beast. As for being worth it, well for £65 + £109 for the fx its not a bad upgrade, it should be better than your current system in most instances. The fx range has a much better memory controller than the Phenoms too, so you may be able to run your ram faster/tighter.

8320E is a later process, lower stock clock (3.2 against 3.5), lower voltages. Should easily overclock to 4GHz plus though. Probably more on that board, but you will need to increase stock voltages.
