GTX 970 With 980 PCB

the 970 has parts fused off on the silicon level, a 980 pcb ain't gonna suddenly enable the rops/L2 cache or memory bandwidth! only difference might be the power delivery phases, but even then I cant see the point

I knew is would do anything on that part. It made me think why? Now you have said it sounds about right, power delivery.

:P

Only asking due to some cards in the description saying they are on a 980 PCB, I cant think myself what benefits it would have.

It's still a 970 so just ignore what PCB it's on. If it wasn't cut down like the rest then it would practically be a 980 and completely sold out at those prices.

Manufacturing: "Crap guys, these 970s are selling too fast, we're running out of PCBs!"

Sales: "So stick 'em on 980 PCBs and make it a selling point, people will fall for it!"

And voila, the 970 with 980 PCB was born.

Actually, I have no idea, but that's my best guess.

Kinda makes sense really,

Hi there

The advantages of 980 PCB are:
  • Better and cleaner power phase
  • Zero cost down, ONLY NVIDIA approved components used
  • Helps reduce coilwhine, particular as OcUK uses different containers and also the fact 980 reference cards rarely suffer any coilwhine.
  • More waterblock availability
  • Features same 980 cooler and backplate
  • Extremely quiet
  • Best cooling solution for small enclosures and multi-GPU setups

The positives are so many that the small premium is well worth it, ask anyone with an OcUK 970, the quality is above and beyond in my opinion any other 970 on the market. :)

I can vouch for this. I recommended one (OCUK 970) to my brother, and the quality of the card is tremendous. No plastic shrouds here!

Clocked really well, with excellent quiet cooling.

Oh, and zero whine.

Thanks Gibbo.
So looks like I'm going to get the 970 for my next build. Now to sort the rest of the spec out. Only gaming at 1080p, more so for the next 3 years too. The 970 should be good for that length of time to keep games maxed out.

Any thoughts guys? May sound a little odd but I built my current q6600 machine 7 years ago!

I suspect a 970 will not carry max settings for 3 years . it might be good for that length of time with AA removed and/or settings slightly tweaked mind.

Seems more so 1-2years then the third year setting may need to be reduce as you have pointed out.
3years times I aim to replace the computer and monitor anyway.
