Sorry if this is in the wrong section but we do have a YouTube thread here, and this is kind of similar.

A new video service called Vessel has launched. It gives you early access to your favourite YT video creators content and possibly in the future exclusive access to content not on YT. If you sign up within the next few days, you get 1 years free access. No bank/credit card required, just your email and a username, D.O.B. I've just signed up and I like it. Very slick. :)

Here's Veritasium explaining more.

I don't see what the benefit is for the (paid) subscriber?

I think it's for early access to video content and maybe exclusive access to some content in the future. For $3 per month though, seems worth it. I'll try it free for a year and then decide.

I'll expand my original reply...

The only benefit given in that advert is to get content earlier than on YouTube. But if Vessel doesn't exist then that same content would go straight to YT and not be delayed (because the makers want the advertising revenue as fast as possible). It's only delayed because the maker wants a cut of the subscription money from Vessel first. It doesn't even say there are no adverts. If there was no Vessel then the user gets the same content in the same timeframe... for free.

So by supporting Vessel the user is encouraging the same content released at the same time as it was before but only to paying subscribers.

Where's the benefit?

Seems retarded.
Www.patreon.com make far more sense. For creators to get money.

For most youtube stuff, don't care if I get it a few days latter as it changes nothing.
I do however back one project on patreon, get to watch it live and so can ask questions to guests and it's worth it getting money. Actually strictly speaking don't need to pay to watch it live. But hey ho.

It's free for a year. If it's pants, don't subscribe. You have a year to make your minds up.

True and thank you for the link. It is appreciated.

But I think I'll pass on it as I don't want to encourage people to move away from a free end-user model :)

I turned him off when he said Irish peasants were eating 8lb-14lb of potatoes per day. Just have a little think about that for a minute.

My favourite YT video creators would simply not be my favourite YT creators if they moved to this, there isn't anything on YT I consider irreplaceable or that I need to see NOW.

Are youtubers getting a payment from Hulu to move. I can't see why anyone would use this service it's utter crud. When there's things like patreon out there.

I dint even see how they make much money.
So you oayn$3a month, Hulu take a slice then all the youtubers take a slice.

Hope people don't sign up even for the free year.

Think the idea of 'pay for' content is going to go to a few YouTuber heads. There's quite a difference between watching content with an annoying ad at the start or bottom of the video and actively paying to watch someone's stuff on a subscription basis. Even at the low cost Vessel seems to be charging.

There are undoubtedly people who provide excellent content on YouTube who, for some, could justify a subscription basis, but I don't see it really gripping a mass audience.

Popular YouTubers may threaten to publish with Vessel first and YouTube later but they'll only create a bit of a vacuum for existing and new content providers to step in and claim a bit of their cut (£/$). Not sure many people I've seen talking about Vessel have really taken that possibility into consideration.

The likes of Rooster Teeth already do this themselves by allowing people to pay to become "sponsors", and then get early access to videos and podcasts. It's a great idea for both sides of it:

- The people who want to pay, get content earlier
- The people who don't want to pay, get a better funded standard of content with less advertising

It's a win win regardless of which side you're on, but then my experience is only of Rooster Teeth.
