Jeremy Clarkson suspended from BBC

Clarkson verbally assaulted and physically assaulted his superior at work, there is little to no justification for this and even less defence. He should have been sacked.

Not his superior. Far from it; just a producer.

(not suggesting that makes a difference, just correcting a point of fact)

So in short whats the latest on this?

He's been dropped and contract not renewed, North Yorkshire Police has asked the Beeb for its report on the incident and many people lost in a sea of despair as Sunday night will never be the same...

I'm a big fan of Clarkson, bought most of his books, always watch top gear, even read his column in the Snu...

He got the right decision, and any failure to sack him would send the wrong message to his fans about how you can behave at work.

Top Gear will effectively die and come back as something else on another channel.

Lol at local news reporting

Oh ****, I rode through Cheddar Gorge 2 years ago this summer. I better be careful.

You think he needed to be sacked to prevent him setting a bad example to all those impressionable middle aged car enthusiasts?

I couldn't care less about his past incidents, most of them were a case of hardening the **** up or not anywhere close enough to sack him. A lot of the blame also has to be out on the BBC considering the amount of people the footage will go through before being aired. What's happened this time though is completely out of order and is entirely down to him. Anyone else would be sacked for it so I think they had no choice this time. I do love the people saying "Well what about Saville?!?!"!!!?" though, it's embarrassing to even compare the two, let alone imply Clarkson should get away with assaulting somebody just because Saville did for so long.

I have to say I am a believer of hardening up and am not a fan of excessive PC behaviour. Some of the things that JC has done was teetering on the edge of taste, but you go to ANY comedy show, and you will get things 10x worse. I don't like the BBC telling me what I should and should not be offended by.

The rhyme (heck I was taught that nursery rhyme as a child and only stopped using it when I realised what I was saying), the truckers joke, the Mexican jokes etc... I mean really? I've seen more offensive humour in an Amish town in America... What's happened to the British stiff upper lip, thick skin? Heck I'm a Johnny Foreigner and should be more sensitive to this sort of thing but I find it a riot. There is offence with intent (i.e. truly racist people, with vitriolic and aggressive xenophobic views) and then there's the contextual side of certain words and sentences which aren't meant to offend, but highlight something for the sake of humour.

However, that said, these are based on my own views/values. I do understand why these guidelines are needed in society/companies, and from a purely black and white point of view, they have made the right decision to fire him - that I cannot disagree with. It's just a shame it's come to this.

Ah thanks.

Licence fee payers are already in terminal decline, this isn't going to help that.
Not that i care, "the unique way the BBC gets its funding" belongs in the 1920's

What does a producer actually do though ? ( don't say produce lol ). Surely everyone on set including JC, is answerable to the producer ?

The best part is at the end of the article.

It comes just two years after Clarkson's colleague James May filmed a sequence with a double-decker bus in Cheddar Gorge.

Clarkson is not believed to have been there for the filming.

I didn't drive through Cheddar Gorge 2 years ago. I better be even more careful. :D

Producer > Presenter. Clarkson has a role in the production of the show? How do you mean? I'm aware he's involved in the writing process.

Not on the BBC

I am sure I read in Private Eye (or somewhere else) that the BBC purchased the rights for the show from Clarkson et al, and that the three presenters cannot work on a similar formatted show (entertainment show on cars) for a period of years.

Clarkson's friends at Sky will no doubt give him (and May and Hammond) the opportunity to work on a show there and earn better money.

Not sure if I'm getting this the other way about.

They have said they will not be renweing his contract

Therefore doesn't that eman like the other 2 he is contracted till the end of this series.

So there should be nothing stopping them broadcasting the other show's in the series or the 3 of them doing the uk Top Gear Live Shows?

In hindsight if JC hadn't gone and handed him self in then it would have been dealt with differently I would think.

Still, I'll submit my CV in for the role - you never know rofl

I do not really 'understand' the 'PC behaviour' thing, I mean it is basically 'not acting like an offensive piece of ****' and stopping people doing that is a good thing no?

Also; I've been on the radio pretty recently and had to be briefed about the Ofcom regulations, which are an absolute minefield.

For as long as they are contracted to the BBC, and they ain't going to do it without him, it wouldn't work without him anyway.

Techincally speaking he hasn't been sacked, he just hasn't had his contract renewed.

Isn't that illegal? (genuine question). I would have thought holding an investigation into something and opting not to disciple the offender, but then fail to renew his employment contract despite the fact your were going to beforehand is a breach of some employment law or something? It removes any ability to appeal the outcome of the investigation as the isn't one. Just seems a bit dodgy to me /shrug.
