Spring is almost upon us and I need a new charcoal barbecue, I have a budget of no more than £150.

I've looked at almost every option available and haven't found one I really fancy.

It must be quite large, like a barrel or half barrel, kettle maybe?.

I've seen the Weber kettle BBQs but I'm not sold on them yet.

What do you recommend.

Thanks.

The largest weber you can afford. There is no reason to look anywhere else. They cook brilliantly and last well. I've been using weber bbq's for 20 years and they are faultless. Once you realise how to use the lid you will find how other people barbecue upsetting :p

I often see the larger webbers around for that sort of money, it's all the extras such as chimney starter etc that bumps up the price.

If you can stretch to this I'd highly recommend it. I'd be surprised if you don't come across this for less with a bit of research.

Or the other 57cm model which is much more basic.

I know it's not a barrel BBQ but personally I prefer this type.

I had a webber old design as described - lasts for ages, in the end I had to give it to nextdoor when I moved to a small place for a while. I had it outside for over 12 years. The only thing is that the vent at the top rusts and remember to shut it!

Now have a jamie oliver open grill.. works really well for straight grilling, but doesn't have the capability for doing lid-on long cooks or smoking.

Weber here, left out all year no cover, last one I replaced had wooden handles so last 10 years.

I'm leaning towards something with a thermometer but it's not essential.

100% Weber 57cm with the cleaning bit at the bottom. One touch i think its called. They can be had for £150. Will last you over 10 years for sure.

again,
weber!

I have a weber 57cm premium and would not swap it for anything. I'm pretty serious about BBQing and I love it! it's not so much about how well they're made; but the proportions of the whole thing are just ideal. distance from coals, size of coal pan, size of grill. partition layout - everything.

you're buying at the worst possible time though so you will pay full price, but you will also get full use out of it over the season so not bad really

I got mine end of season, ex display on a 20% off weekend at homebase I think it cost me about £70 but I'm just showing off with that fact - you will pay more for one at this time of year.

The *only* criticism I have of the 57cm premium is that it's very easy to pull along on the wheels and have the whole thing tip over, skid along the ground (aided by the wheels) and smash off the floor. I keep part of a roof tile on the little rack thing at the bottom near the foot to prevent this, and try to pull it around with the foot at the back. if you pull is with the foot at the front that's when it can topple over and I've done it twice now (not lit /hot thankfully!)

if you're going to pimp it out buy a weber charcoal starter. it's an absolute god send.

if you are to pimp it out further with a cover there's two types - a cheap one and an expensive one. Avoid the cheap one at all costs. it is terrible and should not be for sale under the weber name!

Weber it is then :D

Thanks for the guidance chaps, I think I'm going to order the Mastertouch it's a bit more than I wanted to spend but as you lot say it's one the best.

Cheers all.

Edit;

I've ordered the Original Kettle Premium.

I've got a Weber MasterTouch 57cm and I love it. I have always had Weber kettles, their build quality is fantastic and they last forever. I used mine last Sunday and I'll be using it again this Sunday. Pop into the BBQ thread in La Cuisine to let us know how you get on, there are a few of us that post in there regularly that are keen BBQers :)
