Looking for a NAS

Dam so hard!!!

After reading about the Qnap it makes me want one! but they are pricey! and so are HDD!!
I assume the WD Red is my best choice of a NAS drive?

But then am I going overkill! I just want it to stream media to my smart TV and tablets, use it for storage and be able to access it from my mobile while I'm not at home.
It will be connected to a Asus RT-68uAC router.

Dam you technology!

I used to be a QNAP fanboy- but their lack of updates and time taken to address security vulnerabilities really got to me.

Switched to Synology and never looked back - Even as an IT geek I love that I don't need to mess with it - it just works.

no chance - defo not faster. Even though an equivalent priced qnap might have a 'higher specc'd cpu - I've yet to see QNAP's beat Synology nas's for throughput.

Trust me dude Synology > QNAP anyday, it's worth the little bit extra.

https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/5.1 - Thats just a touch on the surface of what these things are capable of.

errr - what does the qnap do that a synology can't?

On the fly hardware transcoding and the 251 also a allows a virtual machine to run on it.

I have both Synology and QNAP both are really good, but the hardware transcoding is a major plus for me when watching videos on tablets etc.

There not much between Synology and QNAP these days, you won't be disappointed with either.

Dont mix drive sizes, synology uses its own SHR (synology hybrid raid) if you use two 2tb and one 1tb you will only get 3tb of storage. Just get two 2tb for now that will give you 2tb of storage. Then add another 2tb later and it will give you 4tb.

For what you want to do a £25 raspberry pi2 will easily so what you are after ;) just to throw a cheap spanner in the works. Synology is also a pain for expanding as any drive you plug into the device you cannot include in the raid setup. I.e usb or e-sata drives. On the synology webside is a drive configurator slider go play with that before buying drives so you understand how the raid system works.
