FX-8350 For Streaming? With Asus M5A78L? Or switch to Intel?

Still trying to figure out what to do with my setup. To try and cut a long story short this is my build

Corsair 500W CX Builder 80 Plus Bronze PSU
AMD FX-4300 3.8GHz Socket AM3+ 8MB
Kingston 60GB SSD
Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz
Toshiba 1TB
Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 AMD Socket AM3+ Motherboard
MSI HD 7750 2GB DDR3 DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card

I have a new 240GB SSD I'm installing tomorrow

I play FFXIV and with the new expansion coming out I wanted to upgrade my graphics card and start using higher settings. But I would need a new PSU (which is a given, I'll be buying one anyway) but it would bottleneck with my CPU

So my thought now instead of buying a new PSU, card and CPU all in one go I would buy the PSU and CPU now (because my graphics are not bad by any means, and I can hopefully stream) and buy a card nearer the time.

I'm looking at the AMD FX-8350, I'm hearing it's really good for multitasking and streaming so I'm just looking for your thoughts, will I be able to stream with this CPU in my build? Compatible with my motherboard and the Sapphire R9 280X I'd like to get in the future?

Thanks in advance!

An 8350 would allow you to stream games while playing, you wont really get a massive perfomance bump in FFXIV tho without overclocking it,which leads on to.......

However that motherboard has awful VRM's,entirely unsuitable for such a power hungry cpu as the 8 core FX.You may be ok if you get some aftermarket heatsinks to add to the VRMS,and not push a crazy overclock on the cpu.It sadly just a really bad board for 8 core CPU's :/

A new PSU and GPU is definatly the best bang for buck upgrade you can make atm for your system.

If I just upgrade the PSU and card it would bottleneck though right? I wouldn't be getting the most I could out of it.

But you're saying if I change my CPU I need to change my motherboard? I was trying to avoid replacing everything I've only had this build two years

If you upgrade to quality PSU + GPU you can carry them over to the next upgrade is what he is saying. This will last you in the meantime and you can max out all the graphics for what your current CPU can handle.

You are dictated by budget at the end of the day, and also you would need a better mobo to handle an 8 core FX. If you were to do that I would get the 8320E and not the 8350. However if you had the money or option of saving then you would overhaul the lot and go intel. Lots of choices you decide!

SSD will be a nice improvement, the corsair PSU should be able to handle a new GPU if it is not high end so just upgrade the GPU if you have a tight budget.

Budget isn't too much of a problem, I can spread the cost out over a few months as I don't mind waiting. I think I'm just more annoyed that my interests have changed and I'd like to try more things and it's more than this build can handle. Not that this is a bad build because it's not, it's more than capable of doing what I do at the moment I've never had a problem with it.

I was thinking an EVGA 650W PSU and a Sapphire R9 280X graphics card, what do you think?

If I was going to go intel, what cpu and board would I need to be able to do what I'm after? Being, streaming on Twitch and playing FFXIV on high/max/etc

Worth spending a little extra for at least a 750w in case you need more in future, This is what I use:

And I would aim for a 290 instead of the 280x. They are just much better in terms of performance, amount of vram, and probably value for money. Also the 280x is 2012 tech and doesn't have freesync (Which is a bit of a bummer for people like me):

I can't go over £200 for any one part, just don't think I could afford that. Graphics I was looking for an upgrade from 2GB to 3GB (if needed) and around £150 (preferably less!)

If you just upgraded your PSU and GPU,yes you would have a bottleneck. But if you upgraded to an 8 core fx you would also still have a bottleneck in a FFXIV.Just switching out your GPU to a 280x just now would be a pretty substantial and noticable upgrade. You could run the game at max settings, yes you would be cpu in bound in many situations,a switch to an 8 core FX inst gonna yield that much of a performance gain in these situations either tho(AMD cpus are just pretty bad in MMO's in general)

The asus board you own is just a bad match for 8 cpu's and wouldnt be worth the outlay imo

Evga PSU would be fine m8,could save a little cash and get a Superflower Golden green 550w,would power a 280x no problems.

For now get the psu+GPU.Save up some money to get a z97 mobo and an I7 a later date(cost would be around £300-350 depending what yu went for exactly). That would allow you to stream at the same time as playing and hold 60fps almost all the time.

The 280X is a good choice for your budget then.

Edit - Not thinking right

Sounds like a fair plan, thanks :)

Do you think the r9 280x is a good card then, and the one I should go for?

When the time comes if I'm to switch to Intel I don't think I will ever afford an i7, what's the best i5 for around £150?

Something like one of these bundles?

I thought you specified the sapphire 280x that is £200. Thats why I suggested the 290 for a little extra. Did you mean the sapphire 280 (non-x) at £150? Its a good choice for your budget in that case.

No I meant this one, the r9 280x

EDIT: oops, sorry!

I use partpicker and overclockers a lot but if I can find cheaper elsewhere I will, sorry loyal OCers lol

These are I5's,these are great as gaming CPU's,but if you want to stream and game at the same time you need an I7 as it has 8 threads vs the I5's 4

Yea the 280x is a good card,i used to have one,is definatly one the best value for money GPU's atm.Can still run the newest games at really good settings/framerates.From your current card is a massive step up.

Saphire branded cards are generally very good,i had the gigabyte version it was a monster.Only one i would reccomend to try and avoid is the msi 280x,seemed to have a lot of thermal/noise issues

One more question, if a Superflower 550W could power the 280x, when I save up for an i5/i7 I'd need a bigger PSU surely? So would it be better to get a bigger one now?

Definitely agree with this. Avoid msi 280x, not just noise and thermal, but often failing fans, I had to replace mine with gelid cooling to sort the issues.

I agree with th0nt that if you can stretch your cash a little,a 290 is worth it over a 280x.

Either way you would be getting a massive step up for a great price, excellent cards both of them.

A 550w superflower PSU if more than enough for an I5/I7 and any single gpu,you would be fine :)
