Construction sites in Stafford

Paper House hasn't exactly closed down, but they have moved off the high street and changed their name. It's now out near the tip and football ground.
It's my understanding it had years and years of investment being blocked by a local family owned builders who owned half the "boutique" shops and cafe's who didn't want any competition coming in. But I could be wrong on that, just what I heard.
While the students are going, the army is moving in, so hopefully with the investment that is going into the town at the moment it might start to turn around.
But even then it's not easy for any high street at the moment.

@ Nitefly. I'm voting tory, but please educate me on how a thread about my (and many other GDers) hometown leans towards the BNP :-)

@ Housey. No offence taken! I've been in Stafford just shy of 20 years and I know we've lost the likes of NEXT, HMV, Gamestation, Paper House, Bella Pasta etc to the likes of charity and pawn shops.

BNP Paribas are a property development company, not a political party.

Stafford resident checking in!

Don't forget the building works over on Beaconside / the old RAF base as well. The houses there have literally shot up. I live on Beaconside and one of the new housing estates is directly behind my house and they've been building a house from the ground up in about a week, it's insane!

I'm not sure if it was confirmed but I'm lead to believe the new cinema chain will be Cineworld? If this is true then I'm pretty happy! We always have to head to Stoke / Telford / Wolverhampton for the cinema as the Stafford Apollo is utterly dire.

I didn't actually realise they were building a Morrisons (or were, if they did bail) until I drove through Queensway the other week and saw the old big car park gone.

I studied at the Stafford Campus and graduated 2 1/2 years ago. It's a shame it's closing - it has great IT facilities and I'm really clueless as to how they're going to squeeze all that in over at Stoke as their campus is pretty dire last time I went over.

The high street still needs attention. I don't venture into the town centre much but when I did a few weeks ago I was pretty surprised at how dead it is. All the major brands have moved out to the retail parks, there are tons of empty lets on the high street. The only reason I'd go into the town now is for pork baps or one of my banks!

that doesn't look very legal.... should report that ***** to the police

I am born and bred in Staffordshire, but I have never like Stafford. As far as towns go, I have always thought is was rubbish. Can't really put my finger on it, but I have always disliked it.

The only reason I used to go there was when I was a kid because of Bagnall's :D

As far as county towns go, it is pretty poor. Even Stone is a nicer place to be in my opinion, Uttoxeter is OK too. Even the humble Hednesford has had a massive face lift in recent years.

Stafford needs some investment methinks :)

I live in Stoke so a visit to Stafford is a rare treat.

But when even places like "The Works" is shutting down, things are looking a bit grim.

Every branch of The Works is always shutting down or having a stock clearance. It's up there with Sports Direct for advertising "everything must go"

There's another site you've missed on Marston road as well..

Personally I don't see the need for another supermarket but the cinema is definitely welcomed I mean a 3screen cinema is just pointless :p

I work as a design engineer for a construction company at Cold Meece, nr Eccleshall, mid way between Stoke and Stafford. To be honest, I rarely if ever go into Stafford. parking a car is difficult, the town appears barricaded by its ring road system and is not very appealing. Stone is nice for lunchtime shopping and banking. Living in Nantwich, I do most stuff there at weekends.

Most of my work seems to be London based at the moment.

We go into Nantwich most Saturdays for fresh food from the market, butchers and fishmongers. Seems to be doing okay, though I can't understand how so many coffee shops survive in a small place.

Maybe they are building a new hospital.... trolllollllolll

I used to live in Stafford myself.

Couture is a dive. I recall the old days when it was the Collesum that was good back then, but sadly most large nightclubs have died a death now.

Lot of fond memories from my time in Stafford. I was based up at the camp from Jan 88 to July 97 and go back a couple of times a year to see my mate and his family. The town has changed so much since I left that I almost dont recognise it.

No it actually disappeared, with a sign in the window saying 'go to Hanley if you want a Works'

One thing Stafford still has, a proper gun shop.

I liked it as the Colosseum because it was open plan dance floor and made the lights more effective. Didn't like it as Zanzibar though as the dance floor was pushed to a smaller space at the back. Never been to the club as Couture though. I agree it's sad that most large clubs and superclubs are gone now, but I still go to Birmingham/Digbeth for Godskitchen etc. Even Gods isn't weekly any more :(

what are they going to do with the Octagon? :(

Yeah, what's going to happen to the uni / Octagon? A shame to **** Europe's largest computer centre up the wall! No doubt the whole campus will be turned into old peoples homes + bingo hall lol
