So I recently bought some 980s...

So I recently bought two 980GTXs for SLI on a 4k display.

This was about 3 weeks before the Titan bloody X launched (I was somehow unaware of the imminence of it all...) The two cards (with waterblocks attached) cost about the same as a Titan X depending on model and configuration (some Xs can be pre-ordered with waterblocks already, for example).

One part of me feels a bit annoyed as the 980s in SLI are therefore already not top of the line (and they're not even installed in the system build yet...), whilst my Sensible-Me-O-Meter (TM) says "whoah, relax, the price is ** If you must swear please fully star the word **-takingly insane... you're never gonna stretch to two Titan Xs... get real and stop thinking about it".

Somehow I still feel annoyed, I know it's stupid... Anyone else in this boat? help me feel better*! :D

Cheers.

* First world problem I know.

Just be happy that in the games where SLI scales properly it beats the Titan X, for everything else... there's MasterCard :D

Well I'm sitting with 3x 970 and I'm just thrilled that they still run circles around a Titan X at 4K and 3 of them was even cheaper than 2 980's when I got them :)

Only GTX 980Ti will have my interest.

I wouldn't worry about it, They are still the top of the line mainstream card in my eyes. Titans were always a level above, 'best of the best' tier i call it.

Think supercars vs hypercars, just because its not the best, doesn't mean it isn't great. Plus a single Titan x will probably run out of grunt at that res anyway, and you'd need sli.

Yeah the next high end cut down Titan X would be the GPU that would wind me up more because it will probably come in at the 980 price point and the 980 may be pushed down in value like the 680/770. The Titan X is really for anyone that gives not one jot about price/performance.

Don't worry you never top dog for long just be happy with what you got can upgrade again next year Titan X will be so slow by then lol.

Not sure if serious or trolling....

To OP, this is always going to happen with hardware. Something newer or shinier and/or faster will come out. When you get your system up and running, if your happy leave it as is. If you're not sell the GPUs and move on. There's a big second hand market for cards like the GTX980 if you decide to sell, so don't stress.

Always keep your finger on the pulse....new shiny is inevitable....you need to time the easyrider shuffle with skill lol

4gb of ram is not ideal for 4k mate....the 980 ti is coming and that will have 6gb....not trying to make you feel down...just reality.

While the "new shiny" argument is valid and inevitable no matter what you buy, anyone buying in to 4K right now is going to suffer more with that problem, especially given the financial outlay. This discussion has come up many times before, but 4K is very much in its infancy and never-mind the Titan X, six months from now you will REALLY be kicking yourself with the 980Ti and better monitors available. If you've got the money and simply must be on the bleeding edge, go nuts, but 4K tech is really picking up the pace, so you'll be left behind in no time. That's just the way it is.

I'm questioning the sense in getting a pair of 970's for 1440 and coming up with it being a bad move due too ram (as well as the usual dual card issues). 4k is well out of the ball park. I wouldn't go 4k with just 4 gb's either so that would also rule a pair of 980's out. From the current available cards it would have to be 6gb, 8gb or the 12gb card for 4k gaming, No less than 6 though.

well i game at 3440x1440, (1x 970) not on ultra settings but high with AA off and maintain a high FPS.

Hardline, 75 - 100
dying light - 50 - 75

Not really bothered about 4k, so even i'm debating to get another 970 or this beast. Or just wait.

The 980ti really does sound intriguing as a proposition. This would seem to be a natural progression from dual 980s, rather than stretching to titan(s). . Alternatively could sell 980s, get one X, save for a second over period of several months. Better monitors argument is also very valid.

Single 980 here & happy !...

The only reason I'd own a Titan X is if I won it or give to me & nether is going to happen so my pocket is happy (more so my Missus).

4k Monitor, 980 SLI, cost me £760, faster than Titan X, cool and quiet. 4gb VRAM is enough for my gaming and with the possibility of all 8gb VRAM being available under DX12 and what that brings the future looks bright and rosey.

I *actively* chose 980 SLi over a Titan X! The performance difference (when SLi works) was too great to ignore for £100 cheaper (mine were slightly second-hand) :D

With 4k, you need all the horsepowers you can get

Given the choice I would also go with the 980 SLI option, they are considerably quicker than the Titan X and can be had for cheaper, 2K to SLI the Titan X is insane, I am not short of a bob or two but no way would I spend £900 on a GPU that will be half that price in 6 months or sooner.
