780Ti or gtx 970

At 1080p (and the knowledge that i'll be getting a 980ti in approx 18 months), would the extra grunt in the 780ti outweigh the new factor of the 970 (I'd be getting the ref cooler model from OCUK)?

Nope, the "extra grunt" between a reference 780ti and a factory overclocked GTX970 is so small it won't even be perceivable to the user at 1080p, if you're getting a 980ti in 18 months then GTX970 all the way.

Yes the 780ti is £20 cheaper than the KFA2 on offer, but the 970 comes with a free game (which can be sold), an extra GB of VRAM, a quieter cooler, and will use less power while running cooler, it will also have higher resale value in 18 months due to not being a dust buster (the market for used cards that are noisy and power hungry isn't great).

I'm in the same boat as the OP. My 280X is fubared (keeps crashing) and I need a replacement sooner rather than later.

I was tempted to wait for a 980Ti, but i'm only running a 2500k (4.6Ghz) and I think it'll throttle. I don;t think I'll have enough to buy a new card, mobo, cpu and Ram. I think a stop gap now and then a rebuild next year would be the better option.

At 1080p (and the knowledge that i'll be getting a 980ti in approx 18 months), would the extra grunt in the 780ti outweigh the new factor of the 970 (I'd be getting the ref cooler model from OCUK)?

The difference in performance between the two will be negligible. The 970 is the route I'd go with.

The KFA2 with the free game is a very good offer. Some good info on the 970, see link.

thanks guys. I think I'll go with the 970 reference design as funnily enough I want both games and need a mouse mat for my new desk.

I went for the 970 OCUk reference card. It's a little louder than I thought it would be, however no louder than my 280x was.

It also clocks pretty well with no voltage increase (+275 / +505) so benches pretty ok (even with my crap ram timings).

I think vram will be an issue soon with these cards. it should be plenty but i think a lot of lazy ports will become a problem.

780ti, in reality a 970 only has .5gb more VRAM, a 780ti has more grunt and power behind it. Plus you'll save yourself some money buying one.

all depends on what the op wants to do in the future. i took the 970 as i believe it will be easier to shift when the 980ti releases

Wow it clocks well. The Hynix I had on my gigabyte 970 wouldn't go anywhere near as high as that!

You may have a point there. GTA preload starts on the 7th. Need to get my gpu ordered!

the clocks there are not as fast as ive had it, ive kept it conservative and not messed with voltage or bios
