Hi there. I'm starting a job later this year and was looking at getting a car. I'm 20 and passed my car test 7 months ago as well as my full motorcycle test 2 years ago. Does my motorcycle license carry any weight with car insurance?

I've tried a few reg numbers for cars such as corsas, polos, ibizas, leons, etc.

I'm currently getting utterly absurd quotes from comparison websites, £14,000 third party only with my potential new address. When I tried my home address where my parents live I got reasonable quotes such as £1400 with a black box fitted and ~£2500 without.

However when I put the address where I'm looking to be living near my job (in Manchester) nobody seems to want to insure me.

Has anyone got any tips for car insurance?

Try putting your parents on as other drivers if they have a good driving record.

Sometimes third party can be more expensive too.

As above, try with your parents on the policy and do fully comp.

My first year of car insurance was £2,200 without me as the primary driver. My second was half that, than my third was almost half again. Insurance sucks for the inexperienced!

Best tip for a young driver is to avoid comparison websites and to ring round various known "young driver friendly" brokers/companies.

Comparison websites only work for John Average.

seems even with sensible postcodes, first time driver friends have recently been getting quotes of around 1500-2k

If they don't like yer postcode tho mate yer stuffed

theres a number of tricks you can use to try to bring it down a bit, job description, adding family as other drivers, car value but postcde is a little harder :(

Not if you use Quotemehappy who don't post anything anyway...*

* Not advocating insurance fraud. I am with QMH but they do have my real postcode :p

Dont know why anyone would go with them they dont even have a phone number
If you have a crash or the car gets damaged your meant to sit at home and wait for a reply email! that would be a total nightmare if u needed to claim given i have heard of people having to wait a couple days for replies off them.

OP do fully comp with another named driver and try a bigger car like a mondeo etc it will be cheaper than a barry boy corsa to insure and its faster.

Yes they do have a phone number, for this express purpose. They are an online only insurer EXCEPT for claims, and are owned by Aviva and have identical policies.

:)

Try LV, my son started driving last year, they were the only ones who would insure without asking for stupid sums of money.

LV wanted £1800 for Full Comp..... 1 year later it went down to £800.

Worth a go.

Cheers.
