Nightwish - Holy Cow!!

Have you only just found finish symphonic rock :)

Nightwish are probably one of the most well known bands in the genre (there are others if you want suggestions I can give you a few) and they've been around for years although I'll admit I wasn't aware they've changed singer AGAIN...the first one, Tarja is considerably different than the last two, she's more operatic than the later two who take it more 'mainstream' in my opinion.

Having said that I like to hear Marco sing in songs like While Your Lips Are Still Red (Theme From The Movie 'Lieksa!')

Floor Jansen is perfectly capable of the same operatic style as Tarja (go look up some of her early work with After Forever) but doesn't with Nightwish for some reason (prevailing theory among fans is that Tuomas asked her not to to avoid the Tarja comparision).

And yes Marco heavy songs tend be among Nightwish' best work imo. Though seeing as the last 2 albums have been a little light on him I'm glad we still have Tarot.

I read that theory too and I never said Floor couldn't do opera it was more in reference to nightwish's songs. Having said that the operatic singing of Floor Jansen doesn't seem as strong as Tarja to me.

Used to love Nightwish but do miss the Tarja days. Things obviously got to a head where Tarja had to go but was hoping Floor would bring back the operatic side of Nightwish :(

I can't be too down on Nightwish though as they introduced me to Tarot and Sonata Arctica :)

Know how you feel, Floor is however a classically trained Soprano singer as Tarja is so fingers are crossed for the new album. Although so far the three songs they've released haven't really demonstrated that sort of range.

I miss the Tarja days too, I haven't really liked any of their albulms since. I wish I had an angel still gives me goosebumps if I play it suitably loud

If you like Nightwish your mind will be blown by Within Temptation.

Some nice cross over:

Tarja Nightwish has some great tunes - End of all Hope is a personal favourite.

Epica is another one to have a listen to. Another Soprano on the front.
Within Temptation is great - she sounds like kate bush :)

I love nightwish so much (I discovered them just after tarja left) so not really interested in watching them live as I didn't like any post tarja stuff

I particularly like Sacrament of wilderness

Second favourite artist(s) ever

Even more frustrating is that some of her stuff with After Forever & Revamp clearly show she is capable of it!

I gradually moved away from Nightwish when Tarja left but still follow her solo work closely (I have all of the ltd versions of her releases so far + signed stuff :o:p).

For me though nothing touches Ghost Love Score (although Tarja's Deliverance comes close).

Another option is Tristania up to 2007. Start with Illumination and work backwards. Don't bother post 2007 as they changed singer in the same manner NW did with Anette.... :(

Getting into Epica slowly (listening to the Quantum Enigma right now) although they don't have the pull for me like pre 2006 NW.

I would have thought most people have heard Nightwish by now, but those who haven't, finding them is awesome the first time :)

Floor though, his voice can be incredible! Like old school 70s rock band incredible.. Not showing it much since Tarja left, but in one song when she's still in it, you can clearly hear him, and by god I wish that voice could come out more. That bit I heard of his singing I truly would compare the style to Robert Plant and Axl Rose.. Just a shame he doesn't sing like that much anymore, cause we NEED proper 70s rock singers

The new album is superb, they sound almost as if a fantasy novel is being sung, and it reminds me of the rush album "The Wreckers"
