hello teem

need help - lagging a lot for the last 3 weeks or so, only me and my sister use the internet. in terms of my own internet usage, browsing etc & playing wow. yet im at 500 ping most of the time.

my sister claims not to download anything but as this picture shows, i think she is lying.

wondering what my options are, im wanting to restrict her internet usage.. i think that is my best & only option. i'm on the virgin media superhub 2

thanks in advance

Hmmm mine shows :-

Session Data Downloaded 42GB 709MB

I consider myself a heavy-ish user. So yeah, I'd say someone is telling porkies.

ikillbears - deffo gotta be 1D videos. Or Take That if she is of older generation.

My Superhub is showing as 5,056MB down and 521MB up in the same timeframe (2 days) as the OP and I thought that was 'heavy'. Mainly Youtube uploads and Steam/Origin downloads for me.

hello,

OP here, shes 20 something i forget now.. lol.
I really am glad you all got a laugh out of this :), but in all serious what can i do? :<

i know she plays club penguin, maplestory, watches youtube a lot, iplayer, skype video calls. but in two days its not going to equate to 59 gbs surely?!

Possible its spyware on her system - knowing what sisters are like mine would end up with tons of it within days of a clean OS install :S.

shes totes doing something..

my bro is very heavy on the internet and we're sitting at 300gb over 27 days!

thats -;

2 pc's
1 laptop
3 phones
4 consoles!

OP again

my problem is that i have no clue what im doing/looking for really. so i have no idea if others are snatching up my internetz and what not & don't really know how to investigate into such a thing & hell as far as spyware is concerned, i may even have some myself lol.. i shall however run an anti spyware now.

in terms of other devices that the family own/use (but again prior to 3 weeks ago the internet has been solid for years now i would say.):
obv 2 pcs
3 phones
1 tablet
1 console
1 laptop

Its pretty easy these days - bit of netflix and I'm up over 50GB in no time never mind anything else.

On slower connections there isn't much you can really do to tame it for gaming use as most residential router QoS just isn't upto it - on my FTTC just having an upstream QoS policy so no 1 application of any type can use more than 90% of the available upload bandwidth makes it pretty usable for everyone however.

I did find using a managed switch and decreasing the speeds available to certain ports worked better than router QoS for the most part for managing the impact of things like iplayer streaming on a typical ADSL2 type speed connection - though if someone is torrenting with 1000s of connections cycling that will kill most connections even on routers that have reasonable CPU and can handle a lot of connections.

i don't think any of this is any use to me is it?

again you are talking to someone that knows nothing about this, but when i looked up the vm superhub 2 for limiting bandwidth and so forth people said i wouldnt be able to do it without buying something to allow me to do such a thing because it doesn't have a QoS whatever that is.

Draytek or equivalent medium to high end router, and you can apply various QoS, or preferably just rate limit your sister to speeds that allow web but slow down her downloads or torrents, e.g limit to 3 or 4mb down

i have not changed the wifi password from default, ill sort that out. i did two days ago change the superhub password.

im alittle paranoid that when her newly nerdy boyfriend stayed over for 2 weeks had changed settings and things as the internet has been **** since hes been here. i thought it would go when he left and just put it to him nerding out on games on his laptop etc.

;/

Have you tried trying to explain it to your sister?

Some people don't know that streaming/data usage still counts as downloading data even if you have no digital evidence/files at the end.
