PLS HELP - sister is destroying my internet!

Draytek or equivalent medium to high end router, and you can apply various QoS, or preferably just rate limit your sister to speeds that allow web but slow down her downloads or torrents, e.g limit to 3 or 4mb down

im beginning to think this is the option i'll take, is it worth going high end for routers? whats the difference etc if you wouldn't mind <3 totally alien to me :(

i have not changed the wifi password from default, ill sort that out. i did two days ago change the superhub password.

im alittle paranoid that when her newly nerdy boyfriend stayed over for 2 weeks had changed settings and things as the internet has been **** since hes been here. i thought it would go when he left and just put it to him nerding out on games on his laptop etc.

;/

Was going to suggest (slightly tongue in cheek) he'd set it up to use your connection as a proxy for doing dodgy stuff online - but on a more serious note if that was the case you'd normally see closer to the same amount of data use up and down.

Not sure if its any use to you but when I was on ADSL I used a Netgear GS105E (note the E as the non-E has no management capabilities) and used port rate limiting to reduce the impact of people using stuff like iplayer which was causing big spikes for gaming, etc. but depending on what is causing the issue that might or might not help. I never found router QoS to be that great a solution with cheaper routers.

Have you tried trying to explain it to your sister?

Some people don't know that streaming/data usage still counts as downloading data even if you have no digital evidence/files at the end.

she is hands down an idiot, even more so than myself.

she had no idea what or how wifi works a few months ago and didn't believe i had "free" internet on my phone at home via wifi.

my mum stays out of it as much as possible & just sides with her as she has a bigger mouth/complains more.

she wanted and no doubt did download some big game the other day at peak time, instead of downloading at night/when people are at work like i do myself instead of causing each other to lag and what not, which annoys me even more, being the considerate one of course & what not! tried explaining this to my mum & sister for years but neither care.

ofcourse her downloading that game is going to cause issues for me, but everyday she can't be downloading a new game for 3 weeks?!

Just had a look at mine using the superhub portal. At 32,781MB in 3d5h, i'm a heavier user than I thought.

I watch a lot of online stuff through my smart TV. I'd imagine that count's for most of it.

Yeah :| my use hasn't really changed much other than streaming video and 100GB used to be a really heavy month for me - now I can easily double that just with streaming.

Can I aks you a question. I haven'd done anything on my computer for the last 2 minutes, but the data downloaded has gone up 5MB

How can it go up if I'm doing nothing net based on the PC?

Hard to say without more information - it could simply be that the data use by whatever is counting it is accumulated and only updates at intervals a few minutes apart.

not sure how accurate that is.....in the space of 3 mins the amount downloaded has pretty much doubled.

clicking on home then clicking on device connection status every 10-20 seconds it seemed to go up a gb or 2.

not even downloading anything and i'm sure it can't download that fast either.

Your sister is definitely being selfish... 58GB down and ~9GB up in two days? That's a terrible seed ratio. :p Joking aside we burn through more than that a day, easily. If she's not streaming in HD or torrenting it could be malware as someone said above. More likely the former. Who pays the bill?... This should determine the appropriate answer pdq.

ha who pays the bill? mummy of course!

If you think she is lying, install a rat (remote administration tool) on her system and monitor her usage.... Just don't be upset if you see her doing things that we all know sisters don't do!!!!!

They can go up easily not using the net, things like software checking for updates. Or even just maintaining connection can use a little bit of data. Nothing to be concerned by.

yeah i aint doing that, i know i said the sneki approach but not that lol!

Then the only answer avaiable to you is get your own line installed and use that, or move out and get your own line anyway. That's assuming you're of an appropriate age (which I'm not sure of considering the thread). If you're not then suck it up and wait untll you've got a job and a place of your own unfortunately...

If your mum's already unsympathetic, I doubt buying a QoS router and throttling your sister's share of the bandwidth would go down too well.

i'm older than my sister & just have never had an interest in networking/hardware of any sort, therefore as i've mentioned i know nothing about any of it and am simply after advice since my siblings are being unreasonable.

i will just be buying a high end router, problem solved.

Yeah managing bandwidth is one thing, installing "spyware" like tools another matter, though it sounds like her system is already full of malware.

Is the VM SH traffic meter accurate?

Not by the looks of it..
