Epic Games has released assets from the “A Boy and his Kite” Demo that was demonstrated at its GDC 2015 session. The pack is free, but requires and Epic Games account.

“For larger assets such as rocks, ground tiles, cliffs faces and tree trunks, reconstruction was performed directly from photographs using a process called photogrammetry. These assets were then put through a proprietary ‘de-lighting’ process to make them suitable for use in any lighting scenario. Specular and roughness maps where then created to take full advantage of Unreal Engine 4’s Physically Based Rendering architecture. Finally game-optimized assets were generated with normal maps, LODs and collision meshes.

For vegetation such as flowers, bushes and grass we used color calibrated reference photography shot in the field to more accurately model and texture these assets.”

A collection of realistic assets from Epic’s Open World demo shown at GDC 2015. Use them to create new levels or add them to existing ones.

Description

About this pack:
Each asset has been created using photographs of a real world object.
Our Process:
For larger assets such as rocks, ground tiles, cliffs faces and tree trunks, reconstruction was performed directly from photographs using a process called photogrammetry. The Demo can be downloaded here.

The “A Boy and his Kite Demo” definitely proves the potential of Unreal Engine 4 in rendering open world environments with extreme detail, and demonstrates the visual quality developers will be able to achieve in their games.

It’s certainly exciting to see this level of visual fidelity to be possible with a widely used engine like Unreal Engine 4, and with the implementation of Nvidia’s VXGI within the engine, the potential is immense. Lets hope we start seeing similar results in games really soon. You can check out our previous coverage of Unreal Engine 4 projects, here and here.

Wow 8K textures! Games with mods like GTAIV, Skyrim etc used 8K textures. That explained why Titan X has 12GB memory that need to stored 8K textures and next generation GPUs with HBM like Pascal Titan supported 32GB to run 8K textures in future games will look photo realism and life like.

Registered account and seemed cant find download link? Hmmm.

Edit: Ah guess I figured out. You need to click Get Unreal blue button to download Epic Games Launcher Installer, after installed run the launcher and click on Unreal Engine tab, click on marketplace and you will find Open World Demo Collection so demo need to install Unreal Engine 4.7.4 first.

Go to Marketplace and then download it.

You can also download and play the new Unreal Tournament game in development too.

Oh I was refreshed the thread twice to see if there are new posts after 2.58pm before edited my post, strange there was no posts at the time.

Guess I need to clear cache.

I gave up after tried to load KiteDemo map into project, took forever to load assets.

Maybe will try other day or somebody probably would build a complete demo of KiteDemo. Been tried out cool free demos Substance Atlantis, Xoio Berlin Flat, Lightroom: Interior Day Light and Scifi Hallway.

This seems like a good place to show this.

I saw that, It looks ruddy amazing but you know it's more than likely using everything it has to create that leaving nothing for anything else so as good as it looks it's still a long way off until we see that level of realism in a games world.
As an example of what the future holds it's very exciting.
