Momentous day today

It will be momentous when they ban lorries from the middle lane on motorways and put an end to their retarded overtaking of each other that causes traffic to slow down, why do lorry drivers always do this on massive hills, it's stupid and causes everyone to go outside causing massive slow down

Because the lorry in front is going slower. What else should they do? Drive into the back of it ?

Rubbish. You will have to overtake something at some point including lorries. People are just moaning about the speed differential of lorries rather than the fact they are overtaking.

How dare people slow 'ME' down

Ok... Tongue in cheek reply I gave my brother on FB when he said that...

Well the typical truckers answer to that is

A: you never protested against the truck speed limiter legislation when it was proposed so now you reap what you have sewn

B: Your journey is NOT more important than ours. ie: We DO NOT come into your work environment and stuff your job up so... GET OUT of our work environment !!

C: You serfs are not supposed to be leaving the shire so what are you doing commuting miles on our freemans highways and clogging them up and then complaining WE are holding you up ?

I could go on....

:p ;)

Van limits for the van, car for the car I think, but I only really investigated as far as the vans I have had to drive, don't think there is much about that was originally designed as a van and then converted to a car, the Ford Tourneo being the only one popping into my head.

There is a load of technicalities surrounding windows and seats that can determine what limit a van is meant to stick to as well but again, didn't pay huge amounts of attention as it didn't affect anything I needed to drive.

The interesting thing regarding my small buses is, If I look at my V5's my Tourneo's say 'minibus' and other ones (that are van based) like the peugeot expert say 'mpv' which results in lower tax, and if private (like the one I use for the away matches team bus) much lower insurance.

Car derived vans like the Fiesta and Astravan etc. already have the same limit as cars, it's only dedicated van chassis vans that are subjected to lower limits.

Not so, VW T5 van Caravelle (mine) same as a car as its classed as an estate on the log book, even pay car rate tolls :)

I know car derived vans, and things like Caravelle ^ have car limits, but now normal vans have the same speed limits as an artic... yet they are rather more like a car then that! How does having metal panels rather then windows suddenly mean it's less suitable to go at 60mph on a single lane NSL road, or 70 on a dual carriageway?

Everyone knows that lorries overtaking cause slowdown, but everyone also knows that lorries need to overtake each other for the same reason you and I overtake others; different speeds and different driving styles.

I do however often think about the impact a minimum speed would have, or perhaps a "HGV overtaking not allowed" section on busy rush hour sections of certain motorways...

At least now when I get stuck behind a lorry overtaking another lorry uphill on the A19 that is only going 1MPH faster than the other lorry I'll only be stuck at 60MPH.

Ban lorries from lane 2 on motorways and we are all sorted. Forget the speed limits.
Works very well in Europe and they get their 'kitkats' on time.

I'm confused, haven't all lorries already been driving 56 on the motorway? Or have I just been driving behind ones <7.5 tonnes all the time by sheer coincidence :p?

The motorway limit for hgv has been 60 for ages, it's only the single carriageway and dual carriageway limits that have changed.

I'm curious, why not?

Maybe it's just the idiots I find on the roads... I've encountered tons of safe drivers doing more than 70 but I've encountered much more idiots and I've not been driving that long. Like a corsa doing 90 with bits of trim hanging off or the BMW drivers behind me flashing me because I'm not doing 90 overtaking a lorry. Or the grandmas moving into the death lane a mile ahead of a lorry doing and then does 60mph to overtake it.

I'm not 100% against it, I just don't feel that quite a few road users would do it safely, and currently the people that do 90/100 will go up again. I mean for a good few miles yesterday I was stuck doing 50 to protect the invisible workforce I'd rather that get changed first :)
