Car hire in Italy

The girlfriend and I are looking to hire a car in Italy, picking up in Perugia and dropping off in Ancona a week later.

Never hired before...

Should we be taking the full protection insurance the hire companies are offering? Anything I should be looking for?

Absolutely do not take the enhanced insurance the hire companies offer - they are a complete ripoff.

If we take out 3rd party insurance do we have to pre authorise a credit card when we pick the car up?

Probably? I've never rented a car where they've not wanted a credit card.

Yes - if you have an accident etc car co takes excess and you claim from insurance co usually

I used carhireexcess.co.uk, worked out a whole load cheaper than the full CDW from the hire company. A bit more hassle if you need to claim but worth it.

You will be charged quite a bit extra for dropping at a different depot to the one where you collected. So make you allow for this when comparing prices
