My first instinct for me would be to stick to a 335d being smaller lighter and to my eyes better looking.

However a friend has just bought a new 640d and is selling his 2010 635d.

The spec is great and it got me thinking. For what they offered him trade in you can only get a leggy 335d anyway.

What should one look for on these cars (particularly that engine)? Are they much more to run than a 335d?

They cost way too much money to be a sensible choice really, it's a dated car now as its based on the E60. Unless its really very cheap, ie under £17k or so, I'd be loath to bother.

The main running cost difference is the fact BMW charge a good chunk more for the warranty on a 635d versus a 335d for no discernible reason :p

As above really. One other thing I didn't like about them was that they aren't very practical (I'm sure practicality wasn't featured in the design brief to begin with) and it put me off i.e. you can't fold the rear seats down and you can't fit a roof rack to it; not that the majority of owners would want to.

The one thing I will say in addition to the above (particularly echoing the price point, it really needs to be cheap) is that the 6 still feels quite special IMO, I still really like them though I have only ever driven a v8 which may go some way to making the whole thing really

Coupe.

He was offered £15.5k trade in.

Practicality not an issue, I have other cars for that. This would probably replace a Z4.

@Fox...from reading your other posts you'd personally insist on a warranty I imagine?

Not sure I'd want to pay for the warranty on it, but doubt I'd want one without. It will likely be quite a complex motor, so it makes sense to me.

I don't prefer them, at least in the looks department, to a 3 series for sure. That front end, in my eyes at least, is just nasty. Granted the interior is probably miles ahead though, but the exterior just doesn't look good to me at all.

Still, sounds like a decent deal if you can get it close to his px price.

It's an awful lot of car for the money (assuming you could have it for £15500) but it's also VERY expensive to fix if anything should go wrong. And it probably won't, but....
