First of I want to start a bebate as nvida are charging a big premium for double vram now

980ti vs titan X

780ti vs titan black

780 vs titan

so first question is how different was the price back than then for double vram?

second is how well are they holding up to say a 780 3gb?

as this raises many questions as people say, as cards get older nvidia start to drop driver support so that is one thing I would like to raise

the second is how future proof is say double the vram when you double up the memory as well as the cards?

I would like no talk of amd'so price drivers or hardware just nvidias driver support and performance difference vs price premium.

i have seen 580 sli benchmarks and they are surprisingly fast in games that use lots of vram i think having 3gb will help a lot in modern games.

This was my thoughts as 580sli @ 1.5gb would be strangled by its vram but the 3's would allow much more room for the legs to stretch as the should theoretically be on oar with a 780 but that's if need a kept up supporting the multi you drivers.

well 1.5gb seems like very little these days
i think that isnt enough for 1080p in a lot of games

how long ago was the 580 out?
maybe it tells us more about how far we've moved on...or havent ><

A little while ago I read a 750ti review and it gave about the same results as my GTX 480 Lightning. Obviously you can't SLI the 750ti but that's pretty compelling.

Similarly my SLI GTX 480s were only around 15% faster at best than a Radeon 7970 so I really can't see two 580s standing up to a 780 in any shape or form no matter how much vram they have.

The GTX 690 is 5-20% faster than a 780 so I'm holding firm on this, two 580s won't touch a 780.

I know what he was saying.

He's wrong.

Nope, you are.

I ran 2x 1.5gb 580's before i replaced them with a pair of 780's about 18 months ago. I found no real issues with the 580 sli, i game at 1080p so vram wasn't an issue. In terms of performance i found a single 780 gave similar performance to the 580 sli.

'not an issue' does not contain any fact whatsoever. Case in point people told me they didn't have any issues with crossfire before it was exposed.

Got any benchmark results?

It's kinda hard given I'm on my phone but a 3Dmark 11 run will do.

580 sli 11057.
780 16482

I rest my case.

I really don't see the point in most of this thread.

Asking for sli 580 performance is fine and all (only about 450,000 results on google, including comparisons on the 780)

The rest is trash tbh - double vram permium? I can only assume you are thinking because of the titan x compared to a card that has no official details released yet, all from anon via sweclockers or whatever.....

Higher vram cards in the past have only been £50 more than the previous if memory serves me correctly.

As for dropping driver support, um as Rroff said, not a common thing but everything has a shelf life.

Final point about future proof, no such thing. Within the next 12 months we will no doubt see a number of different cards that will beat the current ones in more ways than one, from both amd and nvidia. The titan x will last because it's a solid card, but lets face it, so will the 780's (and every card around that and will become a matter of personal perspective settings..etc ) until we get to a point that a single card comes out that takes 4k in it's stride, which is a totally different discussion to be had there on why that won't happen anytime soon.

Perhaps be clearer on what your point is and you might get some better answers

My 580's are gone 18 months now so no benchmarks kicking about that i can find from that time. Having owned both sli 580's and 780's my observations come from real use and not google figures.

I can pull figures off google too, difference is, i actually ran the cards for 2 years before upgrading to a single 780 then sli.

Check this link http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/inde...ompare=geforce-gtx-580-sli-vs-geforce-gtx-780

Their summary...

In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 are marginally better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 SLI.

Case reopened.

The most I got out of a 480 was 7000 points, around the same as a 7950 running it at 960mhz under water. IIRC the stock 580 scored around 6000 points making both it and the 7970 far faster than a single 580.

The 750ti runs both the 480 and stock 580 close so even running two they will not come anywhere close to the 780.

Those numbers I pulled are from 3Dmark's website so are irrefutable. Going by those numbers (because SLI scales perfectly in 3Dmark 11) it would take three 580s scaling almost perfectly to get close to the 780.

Sorry man in this instance you are clearly wrong. I still own a GTX 480 Lightning which is every bit as good as any 580 and compared to any modern card it's ancient history.

I really don't understand why you are giving the OP false hope.
