Hi everyone I recently purchased a sapphire r9 290x tri-x to replace my old gtx750 while doing this I also swapped out the psu for a corsair cx750m. I've been running battlefield 4 using mantle but I'm getting anywhere between 110fps and drops as low as 30. There doesn't seem to be any stability in performance. Checked Gpu and cpu temperatures, the r9 isn't going above 65/70 while gaming and the cpu is also fine. I'm running this card with a FX8320 overclocked to 4ghz and 8gb ddr3 ram. I've also noticed in gpu tweak that the gpu usage drops constantly from 100% load to 0% and straight back up. I've tried everything I can think of. Updated drivers flashed vbios but nothing seems to help. This card is also performing badly in another games like far cry 4 but runs hardline perfectly 90fps+ any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks :).

pita but you might have a coflict with what is left of nvidia drivers and might need to do a fresh windows install, had to do this myself

Sorry I forgot to mention. I'm running this on a fresh install of windows 8.1. I'm have the same results as what I was having on windows 7. I rolled back the overclock on my cpu to 3.5ghz and enabled vsync and im pretty much now at a steady 60fps although it does drop to like 45/50 in some parts of maps. Could this have been a unstable overclock on my cpu? I was using stock voltages

Hi topdog thanks for the reply. I'm using gputweak atm because of a bsod problem that apparently 290/290x are prone to. For some reason this card comes with a under clocked 2d core. Causing it the idle to low and reboot. I'm having to use gputweak to up these settings will using catalyst conflict with this program? If not how much should I increase power limit by?

If it's crashing in 2d clocks send it back. Mine doesn't do that and it's stock volts are really low. As for bf4 I think dice cocked it up in the winter patch, I used to get drops into the 50s before but now into the 30s like you say.

That's on a 3930k at 4.5 so it's nothing to do with your CPU either.

I'm just hoping dice use dx12 for battlefront.

Quick update on the situation. After checking coretemp just before a game of battlefield. It's showing I'm running at 20 degrees while idle but my cpu is being throttled to 1.2ghz? Possible vrm overheat on the mobo?

That just sounds like the CPU dropping into a lower power state to save power (similar to Intel's speedstep). My 4770S does the same when it is idle.

The motherboard I'm using is a asus m5a78lm. I know this isn't a good gaming motherboard but at the moment it's all I've got haha :).

That's your issue right there, it's not a Vishera designed board.

It was designed for the Phenom 2s and the phases are not even cooled.

If you want the cheap way out then this.

Will do you proud.

Edit. Or you can add some phase cooling to the board you have. That's pretty much the only difference between what you have and that Gigabyte.

Cheers for the reply andy. Just wondering how future proof the FX8320 is gonna be? Or would it be worth swapping out for something else while I'm doing the mobo? I heard these cpus can overclock like crazy with the right cooling. Also what would be the best motherboard for gaming that supports crossfire? (Looking to get amother 290 in the near future)

The CPU is fine.

Yeah it would likely creak a little with two 290s but let's be honest two 290s are for higher resolutions and when you do that the CPU matters less than it normally does.

I really wouldn't bother upgrading the CPU. It's more than good enough for any game. I would much rather spend the cash on more GPUs :D

Just get it in a board that can hold the clocks and you'll be golden :) Great CPU for BF4 too.

Edit. If you are thinking of Crossfire then this is your board.
