What a load of tosh. "Buy our products or you'll be poisoned and die."

Wasn't that at all actually, it was the way Soren talked for about 10 minutes describing the steps they do for the rice cakes the guys use, and they have to keep them refrigerated until they're pretty much ready to be eaten.

Well, cooking with rice is historically slightly dodgy so perhaps he just simply believed what he was saying.

I can't imagine anyone would really have issues though.

Everyone seems to have success with this recipe:

Incidentally, Simon Richardson emailed me today. I got in touch because of Cosmo Catalano's "exit interview" video and he said they were actually in contact when they were creating GCN but there's only so much you can do with the legal issues around the HTRWW videos. Still a shame, but it's good to know that more people are aware of the issues with cycle coverage.

I dont think Sky sell that stuff? (Other than the commercial bars/gels they buy in)

Good stuff, I was thinking about making some, but got put off when the sky guy explained how they made theres with the industrial fridges and explained the potential problems if any of the ingredients are dodgy. I'll just go with oat bars :D

I guess they need to be super strict about it. Giving one of their riders food poisoning in the middle of a grand tour could ruin an entire year of work for the whole team.
It's probably not such an issue for normal folk.

I've made rice-based energy bars using pudding rice, coconut milk, blueberries and chocolate chips a few times. Never quite got the consistency right and they didnt stick together properly. Still tasted good though.

Exactly that, and it's difficult to get the consistency right as you say. Much easier to do oat based that I can take for a ride. Altho my sweet tooth means I generally don't make them now as they barely last before I even start riding! :-D

Fun ride in this morning. Most of the traffic lights were kind to me and keeping up a reasonable speed on the new bike is fairly easy so I averaged 21.2mph.

Now to do that on a ride that is longer than 4 miles.... :p

Preparing for my first 'after work ride' of any distance, should be around 25-30 miles and meeting the guys at 5:30. Aiming to leave work around 5 so I'm not late/rushed and out of breath before I start! There's 2 (guys from my mrs' work) and kinda know them, but never ridden with them before! One guy will be fitter/faster than me, the other won't be. Either way it'll be an easier 2 hours ride than the other group ones I've done (all shop rides so 16-18mph!) and with a smaller 'group'! :)

News just in! These guys were tons fitter than me and the pace was high!

https://www.strava.com/activities/284766895/overview

The two guys I met are both runners and both quite big build giving me some respite behind them (thankfully) from the wind. We ran out to meet another guy @ 20mph, I asked them then to drop the pace a little as there's no way I could sustain that for 20 miles! Thankfully with the extra guy the pace was a little easier, 19mph average for 14 miles! He was smaller than the others and behind him there wasn't much of a slipstream for me. One of the others did a long 5-6 mile stint on the front in the wind, after a turn/roundabout and some hills he was ruined, the other two went in front and I sheltered him for a couple of miles on the run back.

The loop we did was great, I've done part of it myself before so shall do it again. No real hills but the slopes there were I felt I could pace myself up them - even standing for long periods (which I've struggled with before).

aw ;) I know, must suck eh! no but, seriously, I dare you tomorrow to go balls out until your chest, quads and body hurts! :) I'm tired of seeing people in small ring front/mid rear potting along at 9mph!!! GO ON WORK IT TRAIN IT!! AGRGR>..

I went bawls out mate! Legs are tired today but nothing serious... Actually drove to work today as need to pick something up - my legs will welcome a bit of a rest day. I want to build up to two rides like that a week - one midweek with these guys/solo and then the LBS shop run on saturday mornings. I should set myself a goal of 100 miles in a week - but I don't want to achieve it with just one big 60+ mile ride!

There are riders I pass almost daily when commuting, just cruising along at 50rpm/9mph! Some have rucksacks and are obviously not aiming to travel at speed, but there is one guy who occasionally wears sky kit (with trainers lol). He used to try and 'race'/drop me and could keep pace for 100m or so, now he doesn't even try. I love passing him in my jacket, rucksack and commuting gear! ;)

No pain no gain :) I'm not happy if I'm not falling off my bike at the end of the ride haha.

In all seriousness I do work hard when I'm out riding.

I used to be similar, I still do a little now (push myself) but my stamina is so much better I recover fast or can sustain it for longer periods. Getting a HR strap really helped me figure out when I was pushing or just struggling and needed to HTFU! ;)

Looking at my ride from last night my HR is quite high all the way through, it was hard work but at no point did I feel like I was going to blow up or really *really* struggling.

I made a similar one for flapjacks from GCN with seasme seeds in, they were amazing but really nothing more than a 'fruity' flapjack! :p:rolleyes:

I did a solo ride of 20.6mph for 31miles after work. Felt sick as a dog the last two days, but the race at the weekend obviously did wonders for my legs!

Looking at replacement wheels and wondering if to bother with tubulars again...

Save maybe 100-150g per wheel but is it worth the hassle, I'm not sure what to do.

Do I buy carbon dish wheels again, or get something like a alloy Dura-Ace C24 clincher suck up the aero loss and 200g gain and save myself $1500 which I could then invest into a crank based power meter...

As a mechanic...I am useless.

tried to alter the tention of my rear brake cable on my BMC which has built-in aero rear V-style brakes. It was too loose for my liking.

A little screw in the body of the break adjusts how much each leaver moves to each other. Tighted one of them fully in...then striped the thread of the screw.

useless arnt I!

new breaks on order and a trip to the LBS.

this -; http://www.cyclesurgery.com/pws/Uni...=email&utm_content=Brand&utm_campaign=CSU1141

not too bad of a deal, includes HR Monitor and cadence sensor

Seem ok but only mentions cadence, not speed (so it's not the GSC10).

new virb..

http://virb.garmin.com/en-US/virb-xe

$299 will probably translate to £299 which is way out of what I want to pay for a simple 1080p recorder! but nice spec over-all :)

Looks good although no huge improvement over ours except the dive depth being increased (and with that I'm guessing the waterproofing)?

Quite strange they've changed the orientation of the camera when the elongated profile of ours I thought was a huge bonus over the GoPro's shape...!

Ouch, sounds expensive! Are the screws in the shifters just for the throw of the lever and not the actual cable length? If so there would probably be a way to re-tap the the hole (if required) and replace the screw - as it's not the sort of thing you'd need to adjust very often...

Must be an easier way to adjust cable tension with the integrated brakes?

Chain checkers (again). Anyone used one of these: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/park-tools-chain-checker/

Trying to get my head around how you judge the wear just by wiggling the 'swing arm' - does it have it's own tension? The simpler chain wear tool is never in stock (and hasn't been for months...)

the email mentioned speed/cadence :) must be the GSC10, simply can't see them including the more expensive new sensors.. which surely did not come with 500/800 bundles :)

yeah not much over ours! only thing I'd like to improve on my virb is the battery life, the rest is good as it is!

I would guess the park tools guide works in a similar way to the basic chain guide (hooks at either end fit into the gaps in the chain) but the cheap one has fixed sizes to measure 0.75% or 1% strecth whereas the fancy one has a cam to adjust the spacing between the hooks and measures a range of stretches.

I'd just go for a cheap one for a few quid off ebay.

Peaceful commute in this morning :) Loads of fog around though, so perhaps my friend on the motorbike couldn't see me today.
No joy with increasing the audio channels, I've tried with avidemux, but the wind is too loud. I'm going to try moving the Virb over to the right hand side of my handle bars, nearer to traffic, to see if that helps. Failing that, I'll buy an external mic, and only use it in the dry.

Just been reading back through the thread, as I've not been online much lately.
Love FrenchTart's new bike, you've seriously got me tempted to build my own now. Carbon with hydraulic discs must be amazing!

I'm struggling a bit with trying to increase my weekly mileage. I can get to around 150 miles a week (my goals is 250-300 miles a week), but then I find the following week, I can't do nearly as much. I don't feel generally fatigued, but my legs feel heavy most of the time to be honest. I think my problem is a combination of nutrition, and going too hard all of the time. I've increased my food intake drastically over the past 3 months, and yet I've lost even more weight. I'm down to 9.4st now, I was 9.8st at the beginning of this year!

I think I'm going to get another bike fit done, just incase it's position related. I had a Retul fitting done in May last year, but I'm starting to wonder if the fitter actually did a decent job. He didn't even look at my cleat positions.

Also, what do you guys think about bringing a backpack, and using trainers on a group ride? I did this on Sunday, and the group I was riding with politely asked me not ride with them unless I had clipless pedals, and no backpack. I thought they were joking at first, but apparently not. I only took a backpack as my jersey had no pockets, and I hate saddle bags. As for the trainers, my road bike is out of action, so I used my commuter bike which I don't like having clipless pedals on (too many stops).
Would you guys care if I dressed like that on a group ride? Does it really matter that much? I'll still beat most of them up the hills :P

What on earth? What does it matter if you're not using clipless as long as you can keep up? I would also tell them where to go if they complained about a backpack too, unless it was a chaingang ride or something.

The new bike is pretty awesome :) As you say, carbon and hydraulic discs is amazing. Full mudguards is pro too :p

See, this is what I hate about groups in any sports, such ridiculous pompous attitudes towards equipment.

I don't see what wearing a backpack and trainers does to stop you joining in, I can see no safety reason for it other than "people will see our sport as something other than what we like it to be seen as" every sport I know is like this and frankly, its pathetic.

If they said this to me then I wouldn't ride with them again.

That's actually quite rude and unfair.

Do they think they are pros or something?

Disgusting.
